Gunnies:

I have a savage 93R17. Round count is around the 200 mark. I took it gopher hunting this weekend and encountered my first problem ever with this rifle. Ive always shot the same 20gr v-max bullets with it. Prior to shooting a cleaned the rifle very well. About every second shot it would not extract the empty shell from the chamber what so ever. I haven't yet re-lubed the extractor/bolt yet. And it.does not look rounded in any way what so ever. Thoughts?

X2 on checking the cases

I have had a few batches of ammo that would do this in numerous Savage 17's

I know in my MK2 22lr, if I dont clean out the bolt face after about 150-200 rounds I get failure to extracts. So I have to basically scrape the carbon off the bolt face under/around the extractors.

I've had this problem from one box of Remington and many multiple boxes of Win ammo in my savage 17hmr, CCI or Hornady never given me a problem (although I hear it's the same brass?)....the splits are generally obvious if you're looking for them, on the neck and shoulder, but some are not so obvious if you're not on the lookout for them

google 17hmr split case and you'll find lots of examples of how minor or major the splits can be

I dont have the cases anymore but I think I would notice a split case. How obvious are these splits? And my bolt is always kept clean.

My savage would split cases like crazy with winchester ammo. Told the salvage and got a cz 452 and nothing has split in it.

Here are pix form the web of said splits

Very common on older .17 ammo to feel around the neck of unfired ammo with a finger nail and find a split, in 3 boxes of CCI v-max I found 9 in one, 11 in one and 13 in the last box that were cracked. They prime them prior to shrinking down the neck and at that point can't anneal them so over a period of time they can stress crack, I've never found a split on a case with my savage that wasn't a crack prior to firing.
