30/30

I just picked up a 1929 made HVA M35 in 30-30. Single shot bolt action based on the '71 Mauser.... pretty neat old gun with express type sights for 60/120m. Same idea, wanted a 30-30 (Savage 99 would have been nice, still looking) to play with and this lets me shoot a wider range of pills.

I love the 30-30! I am basically a Marlin fan, due to the "aging eyes" Looky mentioned earlier.

I do have a 94 Winchester in 38-55 with aperture sights

My 2 30-30 rifles are both marlins from the earlier era. One is a 336, the other a 336a with the 24" barrel.
these rifle are more accurate with loads they like than are many bolt rifles.

They each prefer different bullets, but when you shoot the right combo, they will shoot groups that will astound you.
Interestingly, while they are both micro-groove, the 2 rifles have different rifling. One is 16 groove, the other is 12.

Everyone should have a 30-30. :) Dave.

My late Brother and his Wife did a lot of hunting together in the Yukon where they lived and her pet rifle was a 219 Savage.
With it she regularly filled her Caribou tag usually bagging one with a nicer head than his.
And if I remember correctly she dropped a very nice Bull Moose with it too.
According to Brother it was one very accurate 30-30 and she was a fine hunter..

I've a 219 in 30-30 and 22 Hornet. Marvelous gun, ironically enough my Grandfather used it tease my father ( Maternal Grandfather ) that his 22 Hornet was the equal of Dad's 336 in 30-30. Grandpa used to drink a smidgen now and again, of course ( every couple hours if truth be told ). As most of that generation did, sort of a back country Mad Men, lol

I have both a post 64 Winnie 94 ; and an older Marlin 336 . The Marlin does feel like a better rifle , but I enjoy both . I personally would avoid a single shot rifle if you are looking to do some fun action shooting....

Thats interesting!

Now look what you guys have done! I just realized I am down to one 30-30, a Canadian Centennial carbine that the rifle mate was stolen. I shall have to do something about that. I had a nice old pelter that was circa 1956 or so, but I gave it to a fellow who I thought would appreciate it. He did! My gunner partner and I buy and sell at gun shows, so the next old 94 that comes to us in 30-30 will likely have a home.

Nice gun. I've been looking for a 25/20 version myself

I forgot all about the 219. Haven't seen any hnr guns for reasonable prices in a while either. I've been looking at the Uberti 1871 rolling block quite often. Thanks for the replys. I'm definitely going to place the 30/30 higher on the need to get list

Oh..wait... I just remembered that I have an old Savage 219 & 220 (I think they are) barrel combo up at my wife's cabin. Well, that doesn't count, so I still need a nice old 94 in 30-30, don't I? I hunt whitetail with one in 32 Special. :p

Owned and sold several Marlin 336, Winchester 94, Steven 325 etc. The one I regret selling the most was a Handi Rifle in .30-30. Easy to carry, accurate and a hoot to build custom loads for. Why can't I find a decent used one anywhere?

Darryl

I managed to track down a 30-30 Handi Rifle about a year ago just when they stopped production. It is a great little rifle!
