Ok. So, I shot my bro-in-law's Tavor on the weekend, and have now decided that i "need" a .223/5.56 in my "collection". Thing is, I'm not a fan of the looks of the Tavor at all. So, help me find the closest thing to an AR without being restricted. I repeat.... MUST be NR. I wanna shoot this thing in the bush. Money really isn't an object. I'll save up, if I must. Ideally $3500 or under tho.

Thanks in advance boys/girls.

Most of the NR bush AR type platforms are quite heavy and long. ACRs and XCR-Ls can tip 10lbs with a scope/ bipod.
The Tavor is heavy but due to the compact nature of the bullpup design, I do like it the best for bush carry.
The XCR-L in the lightweight barrel and Keymod stock would be a close second.

XCR-L is certainly the closest on looks to an AR. And not too shabby! The rest don't really "twirl my beanie". Also prefer as short a barrel as possible and still be NR.

If only I could take this into the bush...

too short for me, horrible stock

Too short, too flimsy, useless riser, can't shoot properly with it folded, difficult to clear stoppages, heavy, long and nose heavy ( the non-Keymod heavy barrel version), average reliability, average accuracy, expensive. If the Modern Verminter is out of range, seriously OP, get a Tavor!
The Keymod is better though!

The closest thing to NR that looks like an AR will be the Modern Varment, ACR or XCR. Last i checked, dlak was selling complete ACR rifles with 18.5" barrels for under 3500. I would say thatys your best bet. Saying that, I would recommend the Tavor. Its a battle proven design, which to me goes a long way.

The H&K SL8 is non restricted, cheaper than the XCR-l, can be made tacticool with G36 goodies and it's very accurate unlike the XCR and Tavor.

+1 for the SL8. It is a fantastic rifle. Definitely the most accurate 223, 556 modern sporting semi auto rifle. I had one and it was fantastic but.... I sold mine because my back is going and the rifle is a tank. Fine for the bench or a stationary varmint hunt but if you plan on humping it through the bush or running it in an IPSC 3 gun match you might look somewhere else. After Hera Arms lower, ACR butt, bipod and 6.5x20x44 it was 13lbs.

Sounds like mine but I have low mag optics. I have the Hera lower, SPHUR magwell adapter, H&K bipod, ACR stock but have a 1-6 Minox on it and yes it is a heavy gun, almost as heavy as my dressed XCR-l was lol.

The closest thing to an AR is going to be an XCR. With that said I would highly recommend a Swiss Arms or a NR ACR conversion if you are willing to spend in the 3-4K range - They are simply better rifles.

I also don't especially like the looks of the Tavor (flame suit on), and my XCR was quite heavy. I ultimately wasn't satisfied on the 5.56 front until I got my FS2000 with a NR length barrel. If you're willing to put up with the drawbacks (price, lack of parts, love-it-or-hate-it looks, no PMAGs, mags don't drop free), it's less than 30" long in NR configuration, and a joy to carry and shoot in the bush.
