So looks like I will be getting a little cash from a side job.

I have been getting the itch for a big bore. Was thinking about other calibers but may be easiest to find components for the 45-70.

What gun is best in the under $1000 range. Not a fan of micro grove as I will be casting my own bullets. What's out there? Would like to buy new.

Please and thank you

With that budget, you have two new options, the Henry or a few marlins.
May be able to find a used ruger no 1, browning single shot or win 18i6 for that price.

I went with henry and other than having it sit in the warranty department for 8 months, it has been a good rifle.

The H & R Buffalo Classic will also fit well under your budget. They are no longer available new but you see them on the EE and I think someone on there has a couple of them for sale right now.

Not new like you hoped, but a used ruger #1

Unless a person wants a repeater this is an excellent choice in 45-70, strong and well put together the #1 can handle hot loads or plinkers, cast and jacketed.
It might have iron sights and can be scoped.
Personally, it would be my choice over a current Marlin or Winchester.
The # 1 can bring out the best of the 45-70 cartridge..

There are a number of decent choices out there. Not counting a couple of Pedersoli single shots, my first with the intention of field use was a Marlin 1895GS. I was never too fond of the straight stock configuration, especially when using a combination of hot loads and heavy bullets. Anyway, young son expressed an interest in it, and now has it.

What I replaced it with is a Marlin 1895GBL

Then, to add a little ;) 'colour' to my little 45-70 family, I picked up a Magnum Research BFR.

:)

I won't address your search for a new rifle since good advice has already been posted. However, don't discount micro-groove barrels out of hand. At one time I too thought little of micro-groove for cast; then I got a copy of Vernal Smith's book, Jacketed Performance With Cast Bullets". His explanation is to consider the accuracy from rimfire micro-groove barrels. These are some of the most accurate factory rimfire available, and .22 rim fires shoot lead bullets. He goes on to explain why micro-groove works so well, but the bottom line is it undeservidly got a bad rap. In any case, a good quality lube is the answer to leading. Viral Smith's book is available from Lead Bullet Technology.

I may be biased here, I have a Marlin Classic Model 1895 with pistol grip. It was a little stagy at first, but with repeated cycling of the action followed by a good polishing of all moving parts she's as smooth as butter. I chose the Marlin over the Henry H010 because of the magazine loading port offered by Marlin and the 22'' barrel vs 18.43" from Henry. I wanted the stopping and dropping power of a big bore but wanted a repeater so that limited me to just a few manufacturers. It can handle hot loads to maximise performance of this flying freight train.

If you are wanting to order new there is a substantial wait from Henry. After talking directly to the Henry customer service department they informed me that there are years behind back order(as of September 2015), apparently when super storm Sandy came through in 2012 it wiped out their stock and flooded the production shop.
