Neck and Full Sizing Brass

Hey guys,

Do you think there is a difference in using neck sizing brass for range and load development and then switch to full size for hunting season without changes to a load developed?

I am trying to conserve brass due to the shortage. I have been using the Hornady head case gauge and I have the full length dies set at .002" shorter than the fired case.

Why do you have to full length size your hunting rounds? If its fired in the same gun then neck sizing should be fine. I think the preference is for a light crimp on hunting rounds in the field. I could be wrong though
 
I wouldn't hunt with any reloaded ammo that was not reloaded in exactly the same manner, with exactly the same components, as the ones I tested and sighted. Actual methods (neck or full length, crimp or no crimp) don't really matter as much as making the methods exactly the same as the test ammo.
 
Uniformity is the key in reloading and I belong to the rat turd in the violin case club. :evil:

This, this is why I do not neck size only.
 
Well Big Ed, you've had this article on here a few times and I wish to thank you for posting it.
However, it always appears to be ignored, which just shows that unproven theories that are always popping up on the CGN is the information source to go by.
After all, what do the lab people at Sierra know about accurate shooting?

Very convenient but the issue is that if you wish to fl bump at one point that batch will have a very different poi so you have to readjust your zero and then when you neck only poi will switch back

I like to know that my zero is always close to perfect with my ammo
 
About the fellow that worked at Sierra , they are not an ammunition nor a brass company.

Although I am sure he strongly feels he knows what he is talking about I would much prefer testing and information from a company like Lapua or Norma in regards to sizing and brass life/performance.

Is there any information about that?
 
OP - If your concerned about the POI difference between neck and partial resizing, just stick with the neck sizing, and check your hunting rounds for chamber fit before heading afield.
 
My concern is a difference in developing a load. I was thinking of developing a load using full length and use the neck sizing for range practice. Not truly scientific, I will post my results.

I used a 03-A3 30-06 as my rain gun for hunting and only neck sized for range practice. I never saw a difference in the POI with the military peep sight between full length and neck sizing.
I did this because the military chamber was much larger in diameter and headspace length than a civilian 30-06 and I also wanted my brass to last longer.

All my standard factory rifles have scopes and I prefer to full length resize. (the rat turd in the violin case)

So far I haven't even touched my neck sizing die, but like you will actually whip up some of both and see just how big the difference is. Spoiler alert/prediction: I don't shoot well enough, or at a range long enough to discern the difference.
