For those of you out there that have bought a new M700 BDL / CDL in the past couple of years, are you happy with the quality?

I realize Remington has taken a slip in the past while (and dragged Marlin with them). But i'm contemplating a new hunting rifle and the configuration is only offered by Remington (or else a custom).

Cheers,

I would not. Remington is winning the great American race to the bottom. I have had Remingtons with misaligned scope mounting screws, sights cocked to the side, sticky bolt stop so the bolt falls out, too short chamber throat, triggers so rough they could not be adjusted to a reasonable pull, bad bedding, and indifferent fit and finish. But they are "cheap".

I prefer to pay more for real consistent quality, and mostly buy European rifles any more, such as Sako and Sauer and Anschutz.

Every company has its ' ups and downs ' so yes I would buy Remington.
Several years ago there were some crappy Winchesters, I had a couple lemon Rugers among the good ones for example..

I have traded off all my Remingtons. Hunting rifles are Sako and range rifles are Tikka and Savage.

Some say Tikka's are expensive for what they are but compared to a Rem 700 you do not have to 'blueprint' the action, tune or replace trigger, bed the action or replace the barrel to get target grade accuracy out of them.

After market items such as recoil lugs, trigger springs, bolt handles do not require a gunsmith to install either.

The 700 is a great design and is probably the safest action out there but it takes allot of extra attention and professional intervention, to get it to compete with with off the shelf Tikka's and Savages.

I bought my first Rem 700 about 40 years ago. Never had a lick of trouble with that rifle or any other 700 and there has been about 15 of them. Some been a little fussy with groups but after glass bedding I have never seen a 700 that wouldn't shoot under an inch @ 100 yds. They can be had in lightweight models , std sporters and heavy barreled versions. There are all kinds of aftermarket accessories available . Not saying there isn't some other well made rifles on the market because there is. You could do a lot worse than buying a Rem 700.

I bought a mid 90's Rem 700 in .280 a few years ago, and its been an excellent rifle. Bought a new BDL last year, and sold it 3 months ago... quality is not there in the newer rifles imo.

I'm on my 4th Remington 700. I sold the first two to finance the last two. I've been very happy with all of them, not a single issue to report. All 4 were sub MOA shooters, you can check out my 5R and 700 Mountain SS build threads if you need more convincing. That CDL SF is a sweet rifle, I would go for it if you're into the 35 Whelen. Remingtons are now sold in Canada with a lifetime warranty. I've never had to send anything back to Remington but I'm well aware not everyone has been so lucky. YMMV.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a 700 if I needed a new rifle. I wouldn't buy the cheapest 'kind of unfinished' with a plastic stock... just don't appeal to me.

Yes, I have and I would again. I have not had any of the "issues" that many claim. [not saying they were not telling the truth, mind]

I have several 700 rifles, a couple quite recent, that were not only uncommonly accurate, but also looked great. [CDL's in 270 & 30-06]

I was out this AM with my 700 Classic in 300 Savage. 200 yard groups were 1.06", 1.22" and .94" [150 Partition, 45 grains of RL 15]

A lot of the European offerings are good, but many are over engineered, and they occasionally have issues too. [Had a T3 in 338 that shot nothing I tried into less than 2"]
My present 700 - 338 will shoot into 5/8" with 3 different loads.

Regards, Dave

Kinda had this discussion with the rep from our Remington importer a week and a half ago.

He was pushing his stuff (also handles Savage, Mossberg, Ruger and Weatherby) and mentioned that they have some deals on model 700's.

I told him we haven't sold a single one in over a year - can't give them away.

His response was "us neither".

Take that for what it's worth...

I have an sps tactical and it shoots great, feeding was a little rough but not terrible. Now it's in an MTD chassis and feeding is as good as it gets. For 1200$ you can get that same setup. Shoots as good as my Tikka did, that was about 1200$ out of the box. Putting the Rem in a chassis wasn't difficult, 2 screws, torqued and that's it. Either rifle is great, they are both winners in my book, whatever floats your boat

I reckon all the flap over Remmy quality issues in recent years along with the bad press has a bearing on that. My last one was a BDL in .17 Rem. that looked nice & shot great with my reduced loads, but the 1st time I took 'er to the range for sight-in, the POS extractor broke in two at shot #38. No biggie for initial try out, but would have been a huge letdown on a gopher hunt.

A fresh extractor from Brownells cured the problem. (I carefully smoothed and polished it before installing.)

Would I get another M700? Nope, but would be all over a Model 7 in .35 Rem. if it were offered as a standard chambering instead of going through the huge gouge of the Custom Shop.
