Need your feedback on the rifle? Debating between the single-shot vs the magazine fed version. I think I want the single shot because it will have a higher chance to fit in the trunk of my car...
 
Honestly I don't think they are that much difference in overall size (the mag fed one is heavier though).

My club has one and it disassembles into it's own 'pelican' case so I don't now how big a deal fitting it in your trunk would be.......obviously depends on the size of your trunk.
 
I wouldn't mind the magfed... I have the Steyr Mannlicher brochure from IWA 2016 and here are the specs:

HS50 vs HS50M1
OAL 54" vs 58.2"
Weight 28.2Lbs vs 31.3lbs

My SSG08 DOES fit in there neatly with the stock folded.
 
Let me shoot off a text, maybe I can find out the case dimensions for the M1......


pfft...not much room for bodies in that trunk ;)

Hold on hold on...........do you mean to tell me there are 'normal' sized hookers??!! I thought they only came in midget!!!

Had one for a couple years.
I'd get the single shot again over the repeater. The side charging magszine is a design compromise to adapt the original HS.50 design to be a mag fed rifle without an extensive redeign. It looks awful in my opinion.
I owned an LRT-3 and never once mag fed rounds, always loaded singles.

The HS.50 breaks down for transport. In fact Steyr used to ship the rifle in 2-separate cases, barrel/breech in one and the chassis/reciever in the other.

It wss an awesome rifle. Best quality single shot on the market IMO. Very accurate and the long barrel really helped velocity. It was a couple hundred fps faster than the 26" barreled LRT-3.

Only critisism is its an obnoxious gun to shoot for long periods. The muzzle blast and overpressure is fine for enjoying peoples reactions when they shoot it for the first time but it becomes fatiguing after a while. The Steyr brake is great at mitigating recoil but is awful for directing blast back to the shooter. 30rds from the Steyr and you feel punch drunk lol. For comparison I put about 60rds through the LRT-3 the first time out with it.
 
Friend has one, change the brake if you plan to shoot it a lot.

It is very accurate, especially once brass is formed to the CIP chamber. (Most if not all ammo on market is machine gun spec)

The side mag is really ugly, if you want a mag fed rifle, buy something that was designed properly, not an afterthought

I did notice that from the short period of fondling it at Shot Show. As I recall the mag is right in your face and it does feel strange in that arrangement especially when there's no way of keeping a cheek weld when changing mags.

I guess whatever that you're shooting, if they're not dead by 30 rounds I suppose it's time to call for air support? :p

Joking aside, what kind of aftermarket brake can I get for it?

An armourer friend of mine told me that during routine training, Canadian Forces members are advised to limit practice to 10 .50 BMG rounds per day to reduce risk of retinal detachment from the recoil. I rarely shoot my .50 more than 10-20 rounds per session anyway.

Check out ATRS (a CGN site sponsor) - I believe they recognized the issue with the muzzle break on the HS 50 and provide a solution.

It's a .50, so everything is expensive, and given the low potential sales volume, I don't begrudge ATRS from making a profit margin on these.

That said, I don't have an HS 50 yet (I do have a Gen 2 DA 50 AR-15 Upper in .50 BMG and it's simply awesome), but I really, really, really want an HS 50. Please Santa.

Our brake, of course.

You have to see it to truly appreciate it. Plenty of happy converts.
The factory Steyr brake is best described as giving Mickey Mantle a garbage bag full of popcorn, and every time you pull the trigger, he'll wind up and nail you in the face... It gets old fast.

If I were looking at those two rifles, I would go single shot without thinking twice. IF there was ever a catastrophic failure that mag well is a liability, it's right in front of your face.... Unlikely, yes, but I am pretty attached to my head. And when loading match ammo (750gr pills), you can never really use the magazine anyway.

Maybe some government bean-counter trying to cut the ammo budget...but enough of this thread hijacking...back to the HS-50.

In mid-June, Wanstall's had the HS 50 M1 on a door crasher sale for $5599, down from $6999. I almost pulled the trigger on that deal, but didn't want to get divorced. I secretly was hoping that someone else did the "impulse buy" on this sale, or got caught by the wife (or husband) and had to sell one on the EE, but no dice.

ATRS has a great reputation for really knowing their stuff on the big .50 - having that mag right by my face might bug me, and I can't see myself cycling the bolt without breaking the cheek weld anyway.

So I'll keep saving my pennies for a single-shot HS 50 instead.
 
It seemed the HS50M1 imported to Canada has a different, improved muzzle brake than the HS50. The M1 also differs from the US offering in that the US version only has the 24" barrel instead of the full length 35.4" barrel like on the HS50.

I also take back what I said earlier on the nose touching the magazine - the pic rail goes quite far back and you don't have to stick your nose to the mag.
