They're worth $4k only because people will pay $4k. Their value has inflated in the last few years beyond what I'd say their "utility value" is. Are they better overall than a similar S&W revolver from their prime production years? Yeah, probably but not by a huge amount. But if not for the crazy collector value placed on them lately I'd say they'd be going for $1500-$2000...maybe, when a roughly equivalent S&W (like the Model 27-2, also out of production, also a top tier revolver) is going for $1000-$1200 or so. You're not getting a better revolver at $4000 than when they were at $2000...it's not like they're four times as good as a S&W. I'm not sure they are appreciating anymore, either. It seemed like last year there were lots of $3k and $4k ones selling on the EE, but now prices are generally lower.

I've owned a Python and wish I still had it. Extremely well made and finished, but the most over rated, over priced gun ever and likely the least shot.
After investing in one, you can bet owners don't pout many rounds through them, especially in competition. Too much money tied up in a 'collectible' for most. I can't afford to own guns I don't shoot.

Whenever I see one I can't help but think what they might be worth if Colt ever did another run.
Is a person automatically stupid because he wants something that maybe you don't appreciate, and can afford it? Would you also consider me stupid for collecting original art, and paying thousands for a painting I really like but that you might personally dislike? Am I stupid because I can afford to drive a Porsche, and really enjoy it, when a 2001 Civic will still transport me? You've voiced your opinion about Python owners being 'stupid' quite a number of times, and I don't take offense as for the most part I enjoy your knowledge and posts, but on this topic you might need to consider that just because you don't see the value in something doesn't make others 'stupid'. '
As for tying up money in a collectible, why not, if I can afford it? I have one I shoot, and 4 that I don't. I don't feel bad, or stupid about it. What I paid for them isn't even really the issue, at the end of the day. It's my money that I worked damn hard for, and if I spend it on a gun I like, maybe other gun owners can just be happy that I'm an active member of the shooting community, rather than an anti gun hater.

What I've learned from the Colt forum is the machinery used to make the Python is gone and the cost to replace the worn out machinery is beyond business sense and the craftsmen are long since retired. . Colt is a downsized outfit from what it once was and has not indicated it's desire to build double action revolvers. .
Aside from what some folks consider Pythons should be worth, they're worth what people are willing to pay.
Yep... there seems to be tons of this lately. Lots of hurtin' gun owners reading EE adds out there. I'm not sure WHY they are reading them, but they are.
The Walking Dead didn't seem to bump the value of Mosin-Nagant M44's a few years ago... still time for the SKS though... they can introduce a new gang to counterbalance the arrival of the Saviors... the CGN'ers!! A bunch of cheapos that complain about the cool guns that Rick's group has, secretly envying them, while insisting that their SKS's are "good enough" for their purposes...
I've been curious for years as to why...
(1) the Hell... would the (fictional) King County Sheriff's Department have one guy carrying a Bright Nickel Python with a 6" barrel... when the rest of them carry GLOCKS; and
(2) why, the Hell, is he incapable... over 6 seasons... of holding the thing so that the barrel doesn't drop down... why Rick, why?

Well, I don't think that I could have afforded one back in the day, even when they were not more valuable than platinum.
Today, as a collector's item, it figures.
Back then, my only interest in them was that the mainspring was a direct replacement for my Colt New Service mainspring, which I broke.
(No relevance, but I thought that I would mention it, for no apparent reason.)
Value is relative thing. $4,000 would get you a cheap Caribbean cruise for two. After a week you'd come home broke, fatter and maybe with the Norwalk virus. That money spent on the Python gives you the chance to own and shoot a classic firearm that isn't being made any more and will at the very least retain most if not all its value when you decide to sell it. I've owned two Pythons and didn't lose money on either of them.
Everyone knows that the high front grip angle and general ergonomics of the Python makes it point low on a optimum shooting stance, the fact that Rick has probably too much practice off cameras with S&W's didn't help at all... Now, instead of a brushed stainless Python the production should have opted for an N frame half lug model 27... That would have made Rick look like he can shoot that damn revolver! No doubt that my N frames half lug .357 would have gain 300% in value in a matter of months!
