Paring a Norinco Lower with an NEA Upper (7.62x39)

I want to get into the AR game, shooting IPSC rifle matches more specifically and I was looking at a simple build.

A Norinco complete lower and then an NEA 7.62x39 complete upper (14.5"). I can buy the lower first (on sale right now) and then pickup the upper in the fall. I'd save roughly $200 this way as opposed to buying a complete NEA AR.

Has anyone done this? What's the quality like on the Norinco ARs? I had a DA 1911 and I wasn't too impressed but I guess I shouldn't have expected much for a $350 pistol.

I'd appreciate any feedback.

You may have a interference between the nea uppers hand guard and the front "ear" of the pivot pin. It happened to me, then proceeded to not fit my lower (a Colt cerro Forge upper did). The take down pin was offset by a mm or two.


Norinco makes decent ar's kinda inconsistent, but you get a good shooter for the $$.

I have a 10.5" PSA upper in x39 on a Norc CQ-A lower and it runs fine. The CQ-A trigger is typical of a rack grade AR, fairly gritty and not that light. After use and the $0.25 trigger job it isn't terrible but isn't stellar, either. Fit and finish isn't bad and it does the job I need at a very good value point.

Exactly what I'm looking for, a budget AR to start with. I can always start replacing parts (trigger) as time goes on.

Did you change any of the furniture on your Norc lower? I understand there's a difference between Mil Spec and Commercial Spec and I'm not sure of which Norinco would be classified as?

I am not an AR expert by any means but the only thing I know of that commercial spec affects is the size of the buffer tube. The commercial spec tubes have the threads cut into the tube where the mil-spec ones are forged and the threads are cut into a thicker portion that is formed for that. This results in the commercial spec tube having a larger OD than the mil-spec tube. It isn't the end of the world, but it does limit your options somewhat on stock changes. If necessary, you can change the commercial buffer tube out for the mil-spec one. Brownell's sells their house brand mil-spec buffer tube for $25.99USD.

Thanks for the info. The whole mil spec vs. commercial thing doesn't seem to be as big an issue as I originally thought.
