I have a Winchester 490..though it is probably close to 40 years old, it is in great shape,..just lately i have notice when you go to push the cocking handle in, to hold the bolt open, the cocking handle fails to hold the bolt open,..i have cleaned this rifle, and it shoots great,.. but this bolt handle not working properly is a safety issue,.have any other CGN guys had this problem,..

Mine had the very same sympton. I took it all apart and gave it a thorough cleaning, that solved the problem for me. Did you take your gun apart and give it a detailed cleaning?

Totally stripped it down, took off the barrel, dumped out the bolt and cocking handle,..cleaned the inside of reciever, bolt, and lubed it up lightly,..assembled it back,..

I have one , no take down instructions and can't find any online ? Mine has the same problem . Can anybody tell me how the cocking handle is removed ?

I have owned my 490 since new in 1978. I still have the manual that came with it. Will attempt to get it scanned and up in the cloud; watch for a post.

To the OP, mine occasionally won't stay open either. I suggest that after you clean the bolt, lube it, but wipe excess oil from the bolt handle itself. You also kind of have to fuss with it a bit to get it hold, but mine still does if I get it just right.

Cheers.
