Hello fellow CGNers.

Im in need of case for my AR15. Whats good? What do you recommend? Is it worth going for an expensive pelican rather than another cheap case?

Please help me choose.

The Pelican cases are nice, rugged and cool looking but heavy and cumbersome. If you have a safe queen, I'd probably get a Pelican or cheaper Plano and cut the foam for a custom look/fit.

Seeing as I don't own any queens, I use a Condor 2-gun soft travel case. Holds two rifles and couple handguns.

Not sure what the relevance of having a 'safe queen' has on the case one purchases?

There are pros and cons to each.
It all depends on the level of protection you require from the case, or how much protection you want to provide your firearms from damage, and how much potential damage they could see from transporting to and from the range. Only you can answer that question.

If you own expensive firearms and transport them in the back of a pickup or on a roof rack, or fly with them and check them as baggage you might want to invest in a hard shell, water-proof case like a pelican.

If you run them to and from your local range in your trunk or in your back seat, a soft case is probably fine, and the case offers lighter weight, and has a lower potential for inflicting damage to your house and vehicle.

The only caution with soft cases is to look for ones that offer lockable zippers if you require it for a restricted rifle, as not all of them come with this feature.

I tend to favour the lightest option available, but have both soft and hard shells and use whichever case is required for the transportation used.

I've got a "tactical" bag (Uncle Mikes?) that I use for my Commando carbine, and if both mine are coming along (I've also got a 20" SP1) then they both fit into a large Pelican case (1770) that I picked up.

Follow the advice that beltfed gave though; lockable zippers are a must and not as common as you'd expect.

This is a good case. About 1/2 the price as the 5.11.

All depends if you are going to leave it in a vehicle unattended .

I put them in soft case ( I use the Brownells Signature ) which in turn , goes into a hard case that is anchored with cable / chain to the interior of my truck

Just trying to make it more difficult for the smash and grab

Makes it easy to just grab soft case out of truck when at range

I have Storm , Pelican , Starlight and cheapy Plano from Canadian tire

You can't really go wrong with any of these if you want it for bit more security as outlined above. Best bang for buck is the Huntsman / Plano when Canadian tire has them on sale

They often dip down to $110 , which is less $$ than many of the soft cases out there .

If you need a gun case to ship or checked baggage , then Storm / Pelican is well worth the investment

Air Canada has managed to crack my Pelican case ....Pelican just gave me a new one and even shipped back my old foam !

Lastly, also makes if difference if your vehicle is full of junk . When i head to the range I usually have at least 2 or 3 gun cases all piled on top of each other

Next to cases are steel targets, ammo cans , my tools an other crap I leave in my SUV for work

Way easier to stack hard case on top of each other

I have this case in a couple different lengths, they are great value and work well.

I have never seen a case that the zipper pulls couldn't be locked together with a small lock.

The ones with just one zipper pull as mentioned, but also this condor one quoted as being used for an AR is one I'd be leary about using for restricted guns.
The zipper pull is made of para-cord. Would you throw a lock through the loops and call it good, or would you be concerned that the para-cord could be interpreted as being easily broken into? I think common sense would dictate that if a knife was used to cut through the para-cord, the same could be said of using one to cut through the fabric, but I'm not sure I'd want to go through the exercise of getting to that determination if an officer was not of the same mind.

I use condor transporter
bag for my AR ..... its inconspicuous

I think that came out wrong !

What I meant to say is if case is in car and you are not sitting inside car

It is surprising how may coworkers have had their windows broken in a blink of an eye to steal change / tools / sunglasses out of it

No different when i have my camera case in the car....its always chained / cabled to anchor points

I have a UTG soft case that appears identical to the Condor that is locked at the zipper with a small combo lock. Many have criticized me for securing it in such a fashion because it will not follow the letter of the law. I feel it does however there can be an interpretation that it must not be "easily" broken into and a soft case can be.
