So I had Dlask install an oversized mag release on my Ruger SR1911 while it was there getting some other work done. I probably should have thought that one through some more as it will no longer fit in my Safariland holster. I can force it in but then it activates the mag release and pops the mag out. What do you think? Do I swap back to the stock mag release or cut a notch out of the holster? The intended use will be IPSC and club matches.

If the extended mag release works for your purpose, you mentioned IPSC and matches, then my opinion is to cut a notch out of the holster. You still have to make sure nothing else can bump the mag release, though.

maybe not cut a notch, but thin the affected area with the sander/grinder on a DREMEL tool- it'll be a try it and grind it process until it doesn't interfere anymore- i'm not a fan of undoing someone else's work-on the HOLSTER, not the gun

Here's some pics to give you an idea of what I am dealing with. I accept responsibility for this issue as I did not even check first to see what kind of mag release I was getting, I just told Dlask to go ahead and do it. I have smallish hands so this makes the mags a lot easier to drop without changing my grip position. I am going to run this in IPSC Classic division so I do prefer it over the stock mag release. Is there any easy way to make it so it sticks out a little less?

You could try a drop in mag release with just an oversize button and no lever. I have a brand new one from Ed Brown that I would be willing to trade. PM sent.

No disrespect to my buddy Joe, but that's a 'honker' of a mag. release ! I had most of my 1911's done years ago by Bob Baum, he just brazed about 1/4" on stock release and re-checkered it. Works great, fits in the tightest Bianchi, Davis, w.h.y. holsters with never an issue and comes out just like stock, it IS the same diameter as stock after all . The only reason I can see for having one THAT big is if you've got VERY short thumbs !

I would cut a notch out of the left hand plate that rides up alongside the mag release, and remove that extra portion of material. It appears that there is a shield between the body and the mag release side of the pistol..... looks like it butts up to the side and the bottom of the mag release. I would remove this plate if it is two parts notch it and reinstall if you really want it, alternatively you could heat the plastic and reform it to provide further clearance.

I`d change that mag release to something shorter, sticks out way too far for reliable holstering even if you cut a notch in the holster. You`re going to bump it on something and drop the mag when you don`t want to.

I would choose a magazine release that is a little longer, but otherwise the same as a standard one, if you want an easier-to-operate magazine release. I think your holster is telling you that the huge release paddle makes it very easy to drop the magazine unintentionally.

Question 1:

Does the new release work for you in competition and do you like it?

Question 2:

What kind of holster is that (looks like a Safariland or older Blade Tech)?

The holster is Kydex or injection molded plastic that can be "Dremeled" or re-formed. IMHO, The holster is just the carrier or vessel, it's the pistol that counts. If the pistol works for you and performs in competition, then change the carrier.

In IPSC, you see a lot of strange things on pistols and gun belts that you wouldn't normally see at the range. If it works for you, use it. Modify the carrier to make it work for you.

Haven't even been to the range with it since I got it back, much less used it in competition. I'm going to try and get a range day in this weekend. The new mag release does seem to fit my hands nicely though.

The holster is a Safariland 6378 ALS.
