Looking for a reduced velocity 308 Win load.

Hm, this has me thinking can I reduce load 308 to mimic say 800 M on a 200 M range on terms of wind and trajectory?
You may be able to get close to the trajectory but I don't think you'll be able to mimic the effect of wind without actually shooting at longer ranges.

Found a light load I'm happy with without taking a lot of time & fuss. 308 Win, Federal case, neck resized, Federal 210M primer, Sierra 125gr SP bullet backed with 33.4gr of H4895. Just under 1" groups (5 shots) @ 100 meters. I don't have a chronograph so not sure on velocity. The bench rest crowd wouldn't be impressed but this is a hunting rig with a sporter weight barrel.
Update: Purchased a chronograph. MV: 2100 FPS, measured 14' from muzzle. ES: 57, SD: 18.46
Going to up the powder charge to achieve a MV of about 2400-2450 FPS.

Just a side not to the SEE mentioned above;

Jeff Cooper wrote several times about this effect when trying to load reduced charges of 4831 in (arguably his favourite chambering) the 270.

Back to the OP,
For a really nice light reduced load in the 308 or 30-06,I like 10 & 12 grains of unique (respectively). Decent accuracy out to 50y. I've only ever tried it in bolt guns.

I also use Unique for reduced loads in 45-70. I also have loads for every pistol chambering I load for using unique. I also use unique when fire-forming brass (Cream of Wheat method) in my AI chambers and in my "short term accuracy" barrelled target rifles.

Unique is a very versatile powder.

Cheers!

Thanks for that. They still make Cream of Wheat? Lol

How many grains of unique for doing something like 7mm-08 ai?
You use 12gr of unique in 30-06? What bullet weight?

Yes they do I seen some last time I was at the grocery store.

In my 243ai (similar to the 7-08 in case capacity) I use 12 gr. 10 didn't give a full fire form and 11 didn't give good results every time. I pour the powder in the case, top up to the bottom of the neck with COW and seal with a bit of single ply TP. I usually fireform at the range (I live 6 miles from my go-to range), but I have done it in the garage..... It does make quite a mess!

All my 30 cal reduced loads are with 150gr flat base projectiles. I have a mould for 150gr cast boolit with gas check that I will use from time to time as well.

Not the powder you have but as a side note, I developed a 700x loads for 200gr casts...I went down to 3gr and up to 8 gr...subsonic from 600 to 1100 fps. Its a fast burning powder so I had no delayed ignitions...the problem with slower powders is that you might get Secondary explosive effect if you under load...pretty bad stuff. I read this article before to get me started...700x wasn't too hard to find back then in canada.

Also 4759 from 18-20 grs yielding 1577-1780fps av

I think you may be confusing Jeff Cooper with Jack O'Connor. I've read just about everything that Cooper ever wrote, and a good deal by O'Connor and don't remember Cooper mentioning much about the .270, but O'Connor sure did...
