Sooo I've been looking to buy an sks and many online retailers are selling them but what's the quality and condition? When a retailer writes that their sks is in good or excellent condition what do theyvmean by that? I don't want to order online and get a worn out one? Is it a hit or miss and if someone can share their experience that would help. Thanks.

Westrifle is a really good retailer of surplus stuff.
The actual rifle being sold is pictured in each ad so just take your time and look through them.they have a few different grades to choose from as well

I have never purchased a complete rifle from them but have dealt with them in the past and they are great.

I assume from your icon you are in Ontario. DO NOT buy from the place in Ajax. They have the best price I have seen in a while BUT the rifles from them I have seen are crap. Painted stock, BBQ paint on barrel and action, no numbers match and after about 30 rounds they started doubling.

Hm... Strange. That place used to have nice SKS rifles when I picked up mine about a year ago, right after they opened up. I grabbed one with modern ГИС markings for bubbafication purpose. No BBQ paint, all matching numbers, good shooter, not a single problem after about 1000 rounds.

You have a couple of options if you don't want to buy online.

-Search keyword "SKS" on the Military Surplus EE sub-forum and monitor what is being sold privately. Get pictures then arrange to view rifles that are being sold in your area.

-Visit retailers like LeBaron, Cabelas, Tenda, etc. (do a google search in your area) and check out what they have.

I purchaced a Russian SKS from LeBaron and a Chinese SKS from Tenda. Both were helpful and offered to show me 2 or 3 rifles before I made my decision.

Good luck!

All weimajack's are plus shipping AND tax. Gets expensive with already borderline high price to start. I got an unrefurb and all matching from Westrifle for $250 with shipping and tax included all in to my door a little while back.
Not knocking weimajack as he has nice stuff , it's just expensive IMHO. The unrefurbs and matching he has listed are $299 plus tax and shipping , you're looking at $350 to your door. Like I said not a knock , just being realistic.
Some Canadian tires have them for cheap (around $200ish) and may let you hand pick , there's still the odd unrefurb non-Molot to be had if you know what you're looking at.

I absolutely support Westrifle without even the slightest hesitation. A few months ago I bought a very nice refurb SKS from them, all blued, no BBQ paint except the mag which had to be painted anyways after pinning. A 1956 Izhevsk, all numbers match, very nice laminated wood. The barrel rifling seems to be virgin chromed. I guess that the barrels are brand new. A great advantage of their website is that each SKS (and a Mosin for that matter) is photographed from various angles and you can choose the one you like most looking at the pictures. Their prices are very good at $239.90 and $250 for a hardwood and laminate SKS, respectively. They offer free shipping for each SKS you buy. Their service is excellent.

Izhevsk rifles were only built in 1953, and 54. So if you have a 56 it's not an Izzy...

As above, this cannot be. Is its serial number PH6627?

The serial number on my SKS is АТ4685 И (Cyrrilic). The same number is embedded on the bolt, receiver, butt stock and magazine. There is no marking of any kind on the dust cover. It’s smooth. On the left side of the receiver there is a small triangle with an arrow inside which made me think it was Izhevsk. The same triangle is on the right side of the lower part of the bolt. But obviously I could be absolutely wrong because I don’t collect SKS’s, just shoot them.

It's a Tula letter series Sks , the triangle mark (really more diamond) is likely the Molot export mark from your description.

It doesn't look like a diamond at all. It's a clear triangle. I have no doubt since I looked at it several times under a magnifying glass. The other thing is that the Molot export mark, as I understand it correctly, indicates a Russian export. The SKS's from Westrifle are imported from Ukraine not Russia, right?
Anyway, it's a very good shooter and I'm happy with the Westrifle's service. The length of pull was a bit too short for me so I added a 2 inch rubber extension at the butt and i'ts perfect now at 14 inches.

Could it be a 1 in a triangle? I've seen that on Russian Sks. Anyway I still think it's a Tula letter series Sks.
I have a utg butt pad on one of my Sks as well , also strictly for length of pull reasons , feels good.
And yes Westrifle are solid in my experience.
