All milsurp are going more expensive: only Mosin rifles are at the same old price at 189$ for a long numbers of years. What is the explanation??

10 years and longer ago, you could buy M91's for that and less. Now - different story. 91/30's came into the country by the pallet loads, keeping the price reasonable. There is gradually getting to be more collector interest in the old rifles and carbines. There is a heavy duty following in the US. There is no end to the variations, making collecting very interesting, and not overly expensive.

My crystal ball is out for repair right now, so I can't tell you if the Mosin Nagants will rise up from "them old army guns" status to "holy crap! Look! A Model XYZ Mosin Nagant for sale!" like the Mausers and Lee Enfields. I've got a couple in my pile that would knock your socks off if you knew the value of them.

I liken the old Mosin Nagants to Mausers and Lee Enfields, as I do multi-breed dogs to purebreds. Some people would never consider owning a heinz 57 dog, and likely the same ones would shudder at the thought of owning a homely old mismatched Mosin Nagant rifle or carbine. :p

(c/p from the "other" thread)
Very high numbers of rifles, and in the 'surp world a decade isn't really that long. If the cheap ammo goes away(or diminishes), the prices on these gems may even drop a bit.

Make a video game that stars the Mosin, and prices could climb.

Things can change due general appreciation...few years ago a Chinese SKS could be had for aprox $100( when purchased with a case of ammo)...find one for that now.

EDIT ADD-ON:
I know SFRC had a Father's day sale (2 or 3 years ago?) where a Mosin could be had for $110. They are climbing...

Just a few decades ago Russian rifles were cheap to buy because people were unfamiliar, ammunition was less accessible, and our market of LE and Mausers dictated soviet rifles to be inferior. Not so much today.

1) only wartime 91/30 rifles are still around for $189
2) this is because they have not become scarce yet and market forces are keeping the price low.

No milsurps go up in value until a cheap and ready supply starts to dry up.

Check out the current prices of m38s, m44s, and anything Finnish. They are not exactly staying static in value.

Funny, I bought my refurb 91/38 with bayonet and a hundred rounds of ammo for less than 20. ..............................................[Long Ago] :)

Grizz

that's right, Polish M44 go for around $600 in mint condition and just check out the latest Finish imports for around a $1000.

I'm maybe playing the wrong market, but I can't imagine your run of the mill wartime mosin ever being worth much.
There is all kinds already out there, cheap ammo is starting to dry up a bit or at least get more expensive, and the reality is they aren't fine weapons.
Real milsurp collectors will drool over the odd rare example, but the mass gun buying public quickly walks by if there isn't cheap ammunition to go with.

My first was an 1891 for $19.99

The only ammo I could get was Norma at the time for $25.99

My next was $49.99. I still have it.

So by your logic, I should be falling all over inexpensive late war K98k rifles with rough gritty actions, beaver chewed stocks and ill-fitting parts because factory 8mm Mauser ammo has become near impossible to find at any price.

Of course, that didn't happen and a matching late war K98k is now a $3000 rifle. Yes they made millions of those too.

Or how about run of the mill matching long branches. I bought my first one for $75 out of a barrel at a Canadian Tire. Rifles like it sell for $800. It was NOT finely made and have you seen any surplus .303 lately? Again, made millions.

I hear this argument about MANY rifles (Swiss K31 comes to mind). It never bears out in reality. Never.

The biggest difference I see now, is that very few of these nsoins are being hacked up into sporters. If you want a hunting rifle now, you simply go out and buy one. I realize there is exceptions, but most mosin I have seen are sitting in original furniture.
I could very well be wrong, but I'm pretty sure my old mosin that I got for 150 dollars a few years back will never be a valuable collectors piece.

I thought that too for decades about anything .303....

You can still pick up a full wood 303 for about $400. That's basically just keeping up with inflation.
Heck, at gun shows ypu can still buy hacked up 100 sporter. They aren't worth gold just yet.
