Have a couple Italian receivers. Really like the idea of building one into a 18" .308 with the Criterion barrel. Anyone does this? My Google-Fu has failed me into finding an actual build and insight into what's actually involved in shortening one. And since it's an Italian receiver I don't really care about originality, so save me that BS please.

Forget 18". Restricted status. Make sure the new barrel is at least 18 1/2" to retain non-restricted classification.
The op. rod will have to be shortened of course, along with the front handguard.

I brought a couple 18.5" criterion barrels in a couple years ago for a couple fellas wanting to do the same, I never heard back whether they got em done or not.
The major issue is getting the oprod length right, other than that the build should be fairly straight for from there.
Give Shuffs Parkerizing a call or email, he's the authority on the type, evwn having successfully built a 9.3x62mm tanker.

His website is full of good stuff you oughtta check out.

There seems to be an influx of BM59 parts south of the border. You can build a more reliable "tanker" by using the drop down gas cylinder and straight op rod of the BM59. Garand barrel can be modified to work and cut down to 18.5".

Trick is to get them up here. BM 59 is considered a machine gun.

I have built a couple of them over the years. You want 18.5 - 19 for unrestricted. Requires alot of machining and some custom parts, just depends on how much you want to spend. there a nice little gun, I use one for hunting.

The BM59 is prohib yes but I'm really only talking about the the gas cylinder. Op rods can be modified. Besides, if I'm not mistaken the parts themselves are not illegal. Doesn't mean CBSA wouldn't attempt to block import though.
