new HOWA scout rifle ?

My little Ruger Frontier 358 has the mount over the barrel and I tried a long eye relief Leupold on it, just couldn't get comfortable with it so the scope sits over the receiver.
I'm sorry, I know it's not a scout rifle, a darn fine gun all the same.
If I had the actual scout rifle version the scope would have to be there also.
See, 70 yr. olds get set in their ways ?

Nothing to do with age bud..... The scout didn't suit me either with the full forward....

Don't get me wrong, I cheat with my Ruger in that the scope isn't fully forward and I use a three round may for hunting...... But, if there is no scope forward mount option it isn't a scout......

Not sure why people need to debate this point. I see it everywhere. Not trying to be contentious but things evolve and I personally don't really care what Cooper defined as a scout rifle, although I can learn from it.

Heck, today I think a BETTER version of what Cooper was on about with the scout thing would be best served with a red dot in the standard mounting position !!

It would be handier and faster than what Cooper was messing with. Now if I can just get gun mags to pay me for that.
 
Cooper's original scout was iron sighted anyways.

A short light rifle with ghost ring sites; seems like a scout to me.
 
To me, the only advantage of a forward mounted scope is if you are trying to load with stripper clips. If you have a detachable mag, you have way better optic choices with a conventional mount.

Fair enough. So a scout rifle with an optic in the conventional (and logical) position is an Improved scout. ;)
 
Does anyone have or use an original Steyr Scout ?
I have never handled one ( sticker shock ) but having read about them the general concept seemed well thought out.
As for actual performance and function, I have no idea hence the question.

Not to derail my own thread but other than the mini, the Howa that interests me the most is the Alpine Mountain Rifle.

Several things I like about it but the fact it comes with a floor plate AND a mag system is a great option. Modern Fudd and Tactical Fudd all in one !

I have the detachable mag kit for mine but haven't put it on yet, seems like its would be ok.
Actually I would prefer a blind magazine in this rifle because it will get loaded / unloaded once a day..... if that..

Well, if you get cut with a scout scope configured rifle, you're holding it wrong.

The Howa looks interesting, but to my way of thinking a magazine that hangs below the bottom edge of the pistol grip could be a problem when shooting from low supported positions, such as across a fallen tree or over a boulder. I believe the Alpine answers the question equally well.

Like I said earlier, for what Cooper was going for a red-dot would be a much better choice than a forward mounted optic today.

In some ways I guess guys like him were working with what was available at the time. In other ways I think guys like Cooper, O'Conner and some others were full of crap a good part of the time.
