Hello gents, I'm in the market for a complete, reliable, rifle for plinking at a decent price. My knowledge on quality and options is limited to having used the C7 in my past.

I have found the S&W, Mossberg and DPMS Oracle under or at 900 dollars. I wouldn't mind paying 1100$ for the Canadian made Colt Expanse or NEA.

What's the good, bad and ugly?

No-brainer.....1000% go for the expanse: http://www.bullseyelondon.com/colt-expanse-m4-ar15-carbine-semi-auto-rifle-223-remington-5-56-nato-16-barrel-5-rounds-ce1000-restricted.html

PSA M4

I love mine.

I would recommend Norinco (5000 rounds so far with no issue with heavy abuse in all weather) or PSA (very good as well).

NEA, well, depends on your luck.....my brand new NEA's luck run out after 180 rounds (CCS stock bolt carrier group buffer part broke off)

At 1100 prince range you can get a DD M4 on equipment exchange with some luck.

OP explicitly said not made in China.
Looking for a barely used US made AR is a good option though.

Looking for a barely used US made AR (colt, windham, dd) is a good option though.

Just to add another good reason to look for used, is that sometimes they come with value add options without extra cost.
E.g. Match trigger, extra mags etc.

I haven't seen a Canadian madr Colt for less than $1,500.....Colt Expanse is a US Colt isn't it?

You should be able to find a conplete LE6920 for $1300-1500, maybe the US made Colt Expanse for about $1k?

If I only had $1,000 and wanted an American made AR-15, I'd most likely go with the basic Smith & Wesson MP-15 w/o the forward assist or dust cover.

The S&W's are around $900 w/o tax, saying that I would wait and save up a little more and get a Colt Canada SA 20 instead for around $1,700+ tax (buy once, cry once).

Why? Quality, since the CC is the gold standard in barrels, reliability/durability the ability to eat any ammo. all w/o any need for modifications or upgrades... re-sale will be great too.

Cheers D

I stole a stag arms ar15 with a 20 inch barrel of the ee a few months ago. No issues, is fairly accurate and from reviews Ive read from the states, they're excellent value for those just getting into ar15s

Yes, AFAIK the Colt Expanse is U.S. made.

Not sure why the OP is writing off a Norc, great AR's on a budget.

Guessing OP believes they are lower quality/reliability.
They definitely have lower durability (life-span) but the quality/reliability have been first rate on the one I owned.
I did move up to a Colt AR eventually but the Norc AR worked without issue when I had it.

Might have more to do with the country or origin than the product itself.

Please let's not turn this thread into the default endings. The OP can legitimately state a criteria based on country of manufacture for his toys, AR like any restricted firearms in Canada are toys/sporting equipment. Country of manufacture as a criteria is not much different than the colour of your Nike runners that you prefer to buy.
