S&W M&P - thoughts?

Thanks again all, some really good input, advice and information, and I will try and take Outdoors905 up on the offer to meet up for a try-out.
I have a follow up question after all this but at the risk of hijacking my own thread I will start a new one for that...

In my opinion, the most important thing is how the pistol feels in your hand. Everyones hand is different and every pistol has a different feel. Go out and shoot them all (which I think you've done or are doing.)

With that said, I picked up an M&P 9mm range kit for my first pistol and I'm very happy with it. It's accurate and S&W really cleaned up the trigger from previous models. Plus, back to my first comment, the M&P has three different sizes for the palm swell so it will fit most peoples hands. The M&P has a big following and there are lots of aftermarket parts for the gun so you can keep running it for years as you become more proficient.

Great value, reliable gun. I used one to get through several courses and it never let me down. Range kit is a smoking deal and many are sold minty fresh on EE.

What do you guys like for aftermarket sights? What should I be looking at for a fiber optic set or at least a fiber optic front sight?

That all depends on you. But many people (including myself) prefer blacked out rears with fiber optics front. This enables you to focus right on the front sight. But keep in mind, it's not the be-all-end-all solution.

sorry to go off topic...what did you do to mount the optic? me old eyes are in dire need of the same remedy. I can see the distance okay, but sighting the irons is a pita

OR do you have the CORE?? that would make the add-on easy ;)

That is indeed a CORE and made adding the red dot easy.

I'm not certain of the exact date. You can easily identify the barrels. The older 1:18 barrels were very fussy about what bullet wieghts they were accurate with. The newer barrels are a 1:10 twist similar to what is in the Glock's and CZ's.

You can identify the barrels by the dimples stamped in the bottom of the barrel (see photo below). No dimples means you have the old 1:18 barrel. One or two dimples means you have the newer 1:10. If you have the older barrel and have accuracy issues, contact Murray Charlton Enterprises. They are the S&W warranty depot in Canada. I sent my M&P 9 to them and they installed the newer barrel for me. They are great to deal with.

what did it cost ya to have the 1:10 barrel put on?

The twist rate was changed specifically to better stabilize 147 grain bullets, there were some minor changes made to angles on the locking surfaces at the same time to prevent some guns from unlocking too soon. If the gun doesn't unlock too soon, and you're not shooting 147's, and you can't do a mag dump into one ragged hole at 15 yards, you won't notice any difference.
