Is a .45 too much?

usually a cheaper way to go is just to get a decent top end for your 1911 bottom- get a commander and you can get 5 calibers out of it- 22, 9, 38 super, cor-bon 40, 38/45 clerke, and 45 acp

as long as the barrels are ramped on all of them, you won't have feeding issues

I think my current game plan is a previously enjoyed 1911 from a reputable manufacturer. Probably a 1911 in .22lr after that. Or a Sig p220, lol.

I had a Kimber 22 conversion for my Kimber TLE/RL2, never wasted my time with it at the range. So sold it

You really should start with .90acp...... This gun is so heavy that it basically balances itself and is easy to handle.

If you like the 1911 platform, might as well start with a 45acp first. You will eventually get one anyways. We all do, you can't stop at just one. Just get a quality one, as it is most likely the one you will want to keep in your collection. There are always 9mm's and 40sw's, but he 1911 is ICONIC with the 45acp.

I personally own many 1911's, and always enjoy shooting the 45's

I'm hoping to find a good price on a previously enjoyed Colt.

Shoot what you want but if I were in your shoes I would go 9mm only because it's cheaper ammo. But haters gonna hate, pick what you want. The only justification you ever need in shooting sports is "because I want to"

There is a reason why some of the best military and police organizations are going back to 9mm.
Check out a some CZ`s, Berettas and say a Glock 19. See what feels good in your hand.
You will get in a lot more shooting ( for the money ) and it will all be more enjoyable.

i shoot 9mm 1911 in IPSC. fast, easy and forgiving.

for your first, you want a 9mm to learn on. reason one. Cheap ammo. Trust me, Cheap ammo is EXPENSIVE because you shoot so much, don't make it un-affordable.
2nd. Expensive ammo means less shooting.

You want a 45 that bad for nostalgia? Go for it, but you will be buying a 2nd pistol in 9 to shoot and when you do, the 45 will be a closet hanger.
Cheers & enjoy!

I started with 1911 in 45 and ruger 22, I think it is the way to go personally, not a big fan of the 9mm find the 45 more of push then a snap.

Hoping to keep it under $1000. Based on what I've looked at so far I think I can probably find something decent well under that. Of course I could be out to lunch.

I think you have gotten some good advice. If you have a price limit of $1000, ammo cost should be a consideration for you. Your entire pistol budget will only get you 2,000 rounds of 45 ACP - think 10 range trips. Shooting 9mm would almost double this.

I think you can find a 1911 in your budget easily. Good luck with your purchase.

Finding the 1911 doesn't seem to be an issue. Finding one in 9mm seems to be a whole other ballgame though. Based on what I'm seeing thusfar I can likely get a decent 1911 in .45 and 1000+ rounds for what a 1911 in 9mm will run me. I'm obviously going to be keeping an open mind about things though.

Never mind the naysayers, get what you want. I always wanted a .45 1911 and it was one of the first guns I bought. Is a .45acp too much? {recoil} No, just be cautous of bad shooting habits sneaking in (can happen with any caliber). Have fun. Be Safe. Shoot the guns and caliber that interests you.

Make no mistake there are A LOT of guns I like, but I've wanted a Government with a prancing horse on the side of it for as long as I can remember.

I prefer the 45ACP to shoot, but realistically, the 9mm is much more affordable if you are going to do any sort of volume shooting. Each 10 round magazine of 45ACP is going to cost you at least $2 more than 9mm.

But lets face it, you will be buying a 9mm too at one point. GEt what you want.

45 is not bad to handle for beginner, and the 1911 is easy to strip and clean with many little tweaks you can add down the line. Norinco 1911's are very reasonably priced, easy to find and pretty sound. What you will find is 45acp ammo is almost twice the price compared to 9mm. So if you wanna do a lot of shooting be prepared to pay a fair bit more for ammo. I have 4 1911s in 45 acp and a M&P 9, I rarely use the M&P. There is something cool about 100 year old technology that still performs incredible today. As I found you will always desire another gun and not settle on just the one, AR's are pretty fun too.

My first handguns as a beginner were 45's : old stainless Bisley Vaqueros in 45 Long Colt. Shooting them both at the same time is more fun than shooting any of my other guns! Highly recommend it!!
