SKS Front Sight Assembly Split?

Has anyone ever had an SKS front sight assembly split? I am talking about the sleeve between the front sight and the bayonet mount.

I have a rifle that has a crack in this area but it does not look like it is the barrel, trying to figure out if this is something that is known?

That sounds like one heck of a thermal stress to cause a split like that.
I've heard of bores getting pretty worn out in that area because that chunk of metal doesn't expand as readily as the rest of the bore during heating under fire.
I'd imagine someone started at stone cold and firehosed a crapload of surplus ammo in a very short time.
Depending on how much meat is left in the rest of the bore, it might be salvaged by removing the assembly, cutting back the barrel to just accommodate a 14x1 LH thread and putting something aftermarket on.
 
I could see that happening, people shooting tons of rounds through it in now time and heating up the barrel.

It is not split to the point of falling off but at first I thought it was a ruptured barrel but I think this component is a sleeve over the barrel.

Am I correct to say that this is a complete assembly with a thin metal sleeve?

Ya, it is not just the sight, the barrel is bulged at the end under the front sight sleeve.

I doubt it would be safe to shoot like this, any thoughts on options?
 
I have not passed a patch down it, I will try tonight, I can see a ring when I shine a light down it.

It was given to me, the friend who gave it to me never noticed the issue, we are trying to figure out if there is any cost effective way of saving it, maybe a barrel swap, maybe back bore the barrel?
 
You can get a new rifle for $200.
It was fired with a plugged barrel, possibly dirt, possibly a bore sighter.
Sell it as a parts rifle for $100, put that towards a new gun.
 
You could drive out the pins and see if the FSB will come off. IF it is just a crapped out FSB it might come off easy. Possible the barrel is fine. Never know until you look. Can't hurt anything. Be interesting to see the after pics if you decide to take it off.
 
You cannot cut it down, to get past the cracked area you would be under 18in.

I look inside the bore and I see a ring, the inside of the bore is not consistent, it sure as heck looks like a bulge.

Putting a new barrel on it will cost more then it's worth. You can't cut it legally. Strip it.

I was thinking about back boring it, but I don't know if that would be more than the difference between selling it for parts and a new one.
 
Parts gun. Nothing wrong with that. I'd keep everything but the barreled-action. The later can be sold off as scrap or use it as a tomato stake.

I cannot justify spending $200 on a gun just to have this one as a parts gun for it, if anything I sell this one and spend $100 plus what I get from this one to have something that works.
