Total newbie to reloading here, I'll be picking up a Lee Classic & powder scale pretty quick here.
I'm curious if any of you guys have a lower recoil hunting load recipe that you like that I could use as a starting point?
Looking for something that has performance in the neighborhood of 6.5x55 swede for deer/black bear out to ~200 yards (30-30 is plenty on black bear out to 125 yards or so around here).
It'll be in a 22" barrel rifle.

IMR 4831 is one of standard powders 57gr for a full power load with 130gr bullet @ 3000fps or as low as 54gr for about 2800fps...............the .270 is not a recoiling round but do wear ear protection while shooting as not to get a noise developed flinch.......Harold

A number of shoulder injuries from other sports makes it a bit of a recoiling load for me :( (starting to think i should try and learn to shoot left handed)

With starting loads do you guys think Hornady Interlocks would be a good place to start? I've read a lot about Nosler ballistic tips being prone to exploding. I could go to accubonds or something if need be, but if interlocks do the job at ~half the price...

I was more thinking if they're explodey as well, I've never seen/used interlocks.

The Hornady manual Has several loads for 130 grain bullets starting at 2600 fps. Interlocks will not be "explodey" at that speed. Buddy shot a deer down the spine at 40 yards with a 7mm RM and the interlock did separate. It also killed the s&*t out of that deer.

I have some really reduced loads if you want them Speer #10 manual 130gr bullet/SR 4759 24gr......1998 fps 22gr.......1833fps..............20gr.......1651fps

I would think that any cup and core bullet started at 2700 to 2800 fps would work in the hunting situations that the OP listed.
I have a couple loads in other calibers that are great for the hunting areas they were ment for.

Read up on reduced loads with H4895.
You take any load that lists H4895, and take the max load and can reduce it by up to 60%.

Run a plain Jane 130, like an Interlock, and fill the freezer.

Hi I have hunted with the 270 win for over 25 years. I have only one bullet that blew up. 130 Speer boattail. Pushed over 3000fps. Fragments from shoulder ,guts and into rear leg. Blew up on shoulder. nasty hole. Last time using that bullet. My favorate load was a 130 gr seirra boattail and 56 grns h-4831. very nice load for Vancouver Island,BC Blacktails. Biggest problem it seems that lots of hunters are trying to get the fastest load. plain jane bullets are very accurate at lower speeds. And work. Now I use 130 partitions or 140grn hornady boatails.

I have used 110gr Sierra ProHunters with 38.0gr oh H4895. My 9 year old can easily shoot those out of a T3 Superlight.

Run a regular load And (break)the rifle
your accuracy will go way up
lighten up your trigger and put a muzzle break on it

Well, you have had a lot of advice, varying to what I would say runs the gauntlet from excellent to terrible, with the worst being to virtually ruin your 270 by putting a muzzle brake on it. (My opinion.)
Best advice started with Ganderite, starting loads with 130 grain bullet. I agree with those who said that any 130 grain c & c bullet would be fine, and the accuracy will be good to excellent.

I've loaded low recoil 270 for new shooters and people with shoulder problems. It was easy to reduce loads but harder to find an accurate one. I had best results with H4895 which is not a powder normally associated with the 270 Winchester.

Using 130 gr bullet & 22" barrel :

- 40gr H4895 = 2500 fps. It's 200-250 fps slower than most reloading manual starting loads and recoil is gentle but still capable 200 yd deer cartridge. Excellent practise or range load to start out young and small statured persons.

- 45gr H4895 = 2700 fps. About the equivalent of the starting loads in most reloading manuals. Reasonable accuracy potential.

- 48 gr H4895 = 2950 fps. More accuracy potential than the lighter loads.
