Just went out and picked up a new vest as my old one was 2 sizes to big (XL) and I lost numerous things out of it last gun season. Found them all eventually lol.

Picked up the Blaze Orange Primos Gun Hunters Vest (size medium which is still lots of extra room for me being 160 lbs soaking wet), got it for $75 with a no tax sale to boot in at a local joint down in Aylmer, ON.

Seems like a really well made vest for the money. Most shops are selling these anywhere from $90-99.99+ Tax. Just happened to be in the area and stopped in to take a look!

Can't wait for November.

It's got pockets for everything!!

One thing I always forget is a small saw for splitting the pelvis bone, last year I broke the gut tip off my knife cracking the bone instead. Now I'll have room for it!

Ive got that as well. I cut the folding seat out of the back and use a foam one instead, that I just hang off my belt.

As for the saw, I dont split the pelvic bone in the field. Do it back at camp

Even better but I'd have to pay shipping from them and tax it would cost more than 75!

The other local store in simcoe had them priced at 99.99 for the medium and 89.99 for L-XXL. Why do fat guys that need more material get things cheaper... Just kidding.

Who sits down in the bush when grouse season is open? Except to maybe grab lunch...... Which I do on a deadfall...... Egg salad sandwiches are my favorite :) ........ Can't wait...... But based on foliage, my first grouse outing is traditionally thanksgiving weekend......

Thanks for posting this. I was just about to make a thread on the topic. Can you guys post pics and links and such to your favorite blaze orange upland vests? I'm in the market for a new one, with a nice big game picket on the back. Something along the lines of this: http://www.cabelas.ca/product/59639/cabelas-blaze-upland-vest My Dad has one of these and it's much better quality than my El Cheapo CT one I got a long time ago. I spend a lot of time in these things for a few months of the year so I'm willing to spend good money for something good quality. Thoughts? Suggestions? Help me pls.

The upland vests are nice with the big game bag but they are not legal for blaze orange big game requirements.

There are no blaze requirements for small game or upland.

I use a Browning "Pheasants Forever" Upland jacket with shell holders, lot's of deep front pockets with game pockets and pouches in the rear. I have the matching pants with more shell holders and pockets and the legs have Bramble guards on the front. It's a great non-insulated warm weather outfit (warm being 40-55F),but,not waterproof. With the jacket having a blaze orange back and shoulders only, technically it's not legal for big game in Ontario, because it isn't visible from all sides. The other downside is that the color except for the blaze is russet brown, the exact color of a Deer, not a real safe color for Ontario woods during deer season.

There is a minimum square centimetre requirement for blaze in Ontario for big game hunters. It used to be 100sqcm, I think. All I know now is a blaze vest and hat are minimums. I don't think there is any requirerment for small game unless you are hunting small game in during an open big game season.

And therein lies my predicament. Wherever I hunt small game in the fall, there's almost always a big game season open at the same time. So it's better to just cover my ass and wear a full blaze orange vest all fall (until it gets cold enough and that's replaced with a full blaze orange parka) so that's why I'm looking for a nice one with a nice big game pocket in the back. Keep up the suggestions please guys and thanks for the ones so far.

You need a minimum of 400 square inches of blaze orange above the waist and visible from all sides to be legal during a big game gun season. It's on page...26 or 27? of the regs. The vest I have and posted is legal, and I wear it while chasing grouse during moose season, although it's a tad chillier during deer season and I then wear a blaze parka.

I believe you and it looks nice. However, I've come across game wardens (yes, plural) before who have given me "warnings" about not having a full blaze orange vest on (I had one similar in style to yours). And these boys are still employed locally as far as I know. So if it keeps these boys off my back, I'd prefer to go full blaze orange if I can. Just to avoid the "You're wrong, Mr. Game Warden and now let me point out the proper rules to you and make you look like an ass in front of your partner" conversation. I want these guys away from me as quick as I can, for the most part.

I have a blaze orange upland vest made (I think) by Kootenay Canvas Co. I don't remember when or where I bought it but I've probably owned it for more than a decade. I googled that name and I don't think they're in business anymore. My vest is completely blaze orange except for a reflective stripe on the top of the game pouch on the back. I could care less if orange is not required for small game; I never go partridge hunting without it and wear a blaze orange ball cap or toque too. The way I look at it is I don't know who else is gonna be out there with a loaded firearm so I wanna be visible. I hunt on foot and often leave the trail. There's lots of guys hunting off their quads where I go. Several times a year I will find myself in the bush near a trail and hear a quad stop nearby. When that happens, I assume there is a possibility of somebody near me who doesn't know I'm there and who might end up pointing a loaded shotgun in my general direction if a bird runs or flies between us. Nowadays I mostly hunt birds alone but on the rare occasions I hunt with a buddy, I consider it just as important that they can easily see me even though they know I am there. I haven't been shot yet and I can't say with certainty that my vest ever helped to prevent that but I'm pretty sure it never made it more likely to happen.

PS. sometimes when the season 1st opens high temps will get up into the 20s. Days like that I will wear an orange tee shirt and might leave the vest off during walks in the warmest part of the day. That reminds me, with the summer we had could be some hot days early in the season this year so I need to find the little gizmo I have to wear on my belt designed to hang birds by the neck before opening day. :)
