Im gona weld a tab on my 858 bolt, it seems easy enough. Is there anyone that has done it with some pointers (do's or dont's) for me? I plan on using mild steel and a tig machine. My gun doesnt have the gremlin this would be more so to prevent it from happening.

If you are a qualified tig welder there shouldn't be a problem, others with more knowledge about the gun will chime in,but as far as welding I have been tig welding for 30 years and have done countless small welds and if you have a good machine with a few bells and whistles low amperage capabilities and a foot pedal 1/16" tungsten some ER70S6 .045" and a skill set then it won't be a challenge to you. Some cleanup and dressing after the weld and all should be well, this is based on not knowing the circumstances.
Keep us informed and maybe a couple of pic's to boot. :)

yes tig weld not stick not mig and you have to be careful as you may push through where the striker goes and will have to file (be carful if you have to do this, I've welded a few of these and had to file every time) . Clean your bolt well for best weld. Get shape for tab and leave a little big then file after welding to get bolt to cycle (or wing it a hope it isn't to small). I think the tab is a sure fix for the gremlin .....good luck

Seems a lot of times this is attempted, the bolt handle ends up flying off. Going to have to make sure it's actually a proper weld with good penetration etc, or you'll potentially end up having a bolt handle for breakfast

Well its on there, it took a few tries to cut a small enough peice to fit right then i had to sand it down a bit untill the bolt moved freely once installed back into the gun. I havent test fired it yet but will give it a "shot" this weekend.

How does it make the bolt handle bust off? That doesn't sound fun.

That weld is too cold!! Lacks penetration.

I agree the tail end is no good but the first 3/4 of the stitch seems to bite. I was going to clean off the back end but decided to leave it . I will keep an on just to make sure but I believe it will be just fine.

No worries friend i trust its good. ;) iv been a supervisor for a welding shop for 8 years it's not the best/prettiest weld but should hold ( they were pre heated and gouged out prior to being welded), Though i have never welded on a gun before i know what a weld should look like and trust it will work. Thanks for your concern. We are used to welding a lot bigger things.
1/16(2mm) (if i remember right)
Yes pedal
Lincoln machine
I actually got two of them done as i have a spare parts kit. I had one of the more seasond welders at my shop that weld everyday all day do the other bolt and it is quite similar though I think I will use this one. So the good news is atleast I have a spare, though i dont think i will need it.
