Bought a 597 heavy 16" barrel this week while it went on sale, bought it for a cheap little plinker,so I'm not overly concerned with it not being top grade material, but the trigger is horribleeeeeee....just wondering if anyone has any experience making them smoother...or if anyone makes a replacement for it?

Also if anyone knows how to get the bolt lock to work with the plastic 30 round mags, that would great!

DO NOT STONE THE SEAR! The hardening is very shallow and you'll end up with a mess. Try looking for a Volquartsen one. Regarding the mag, return it to where you bought it. The BHO should work.

JARD makes a replacement assembly, no personal experience with it http://www.jardinc.com/remington-597-trigger-assembly/

Take apart your trigger assembly and have a close look at the sear and hammer mating surfaces. If you see any visible pitting or grooves then they are too deep to do anything about without wearing off the surface hardening of the parts. If they just feel a little rough to the touch/dragging a finger nail across it might be possible to very lightly polish them. You're on your own if you try this and I caution you I've ruined a whole assembly by sanding the sear a little too much. It worked fine for awhile but eventually wore down to the point that the sear would intermittently fail to engage the hammer during cycling.

Yeah $250 USD for a trigger for a gun that cost me $240
Canadian is a little more then I'm willing to spend.the VQ hammer and extractor is cheap enough id be willing to try out.

I took apart the trigger assembly just to examine it,didn't seem rough,a few little areas I touched with emery clothe to smooth it,but no noticeable difference.

Then I'm a little confused, I took it as you felt the trigger pull to be rough/gritty. Perhaps you meant it is just way too heavy? You will not be able to alter the factory parts to any degree of satisfaction in this regard. VQ hammer should get pull down to ~3# and here is a Canadian source http://www.sylvestresportinggoods.com/

No need to get the extractor if the factory one is doing it's job.

Yeah JARD trigger is pricey and only the accuracy build nutz would go for it (ask 10/22 guys what they spend on builds.....) factory trigger assembly is $112 for comparison though. I need a new one.

Don't feel too bad about the Remington trigger.

20 years ago I bought a SS 10/22. Out of the box it had an immensely, horrifyingly bad lawyer trigger. Heavy, gritty.

But now after many years and thousands of rounds the trigger is just horrifyingly bad.........

Mine was a little stiff when I got it, didn't sand it but I buffed it down with my dremel using valve grinding compound and jewelers rouge. DO NOT MAKE MY MISTAKE AND GO FOR A MIRROR FINISH! Until I unpolished it a little, it had a nasty habit of going into burst mode, once even full auto. Yes I polished the rods too. I did wind up installing a VQ extractor though.

Wheeler, where did you get those parts from?brownells seems to be the only place I can find with them in stock.

You can order from MCARBO directly. They ship to Canada and are good to deal with. I have many of their Savage 64 and various Marlin parts.
