I'm looking for a little .223 bolt gun to use for bush walks and hunting. I want something that's small and light. I don't really have a budget. Something more compact would be ideal. I was looking at the Savage 11 hog hunter and the Ruger American predator. There are so many options out there, and I'm sure that I've missed. What do you guys think?

I guess you also want it with iron sights right ? hog hunter or a jw105 will get the job done. I remember those days hog hunters can be had for around $500.

there was a dealer here that had some Italian made 223 bolt guns. Looked pretty neat too, but I forgot the names but they run for about $1000 each. I just looked at the hog hunters and they are around $700 all in nowadays...donno if it is still worth it.

I'd be interested in an Italian made bolt .223. anyway of finding out the company??

What about the MVP Patrol. Short, light, open sights, but easy to scope. Takes AR mags. Or second choice (or maybe first choice now that I think of it) the Ruger Gunsite in 5.56. Again, short, light, open sights, easy to scope, with the added benefit of the LER scope option. For walks in the bush, where you need that quick shot, at relatively short range, the scout scope idea is a good one.

Dang-it. Now you've got me wanting a new one!

I bought a Browning X Bolt with the synthetic stock. 6 1/4 pounds naked, add a scope and ammo. This rifle gets packed around with me everywhere, carried in the tractor cab, back seat of the truck, ATV. The rifle clover leafed all the way down the page to the bullseye on initial sight in, and has never budged since. I really like this little rifle and will never part with it.

If Browning was to chamber their youth Micro in .223 I would be all over that but all I have seen in that rifle is .243.

I'm not sure about the Mossberg rifles...
I found a Tikka compact in 308. If you could find one in 223... I think it's a nice, compact, light rifle. 20" barrel is decent.

Mossberg Patrol wins for me. I bought mine simply because using AR mags was convenient for me, but it has impressed me in accuracy and handiness.
