Hunting Deer and other game with a pump action

Buckshot only in my neck of the woods. Wonder what a rifled barrel for the 870 will run me as banging the gong is always cool....

I didn't know it was buckshot only there. That would definitely make it a little more difficult. But depending on what barrel you go after you're looking at 175-300 for a decent barrel. I bought a hastings barrel from tradex canada for 260. Love it so far.

I plan on bringing a shot gun hunting this year in some thicker bush. I picked up a winchester ultimate defender today, and I'll be checking at the range tomorrow. Shotguns are a great versitile hunting tool, the winchester has an easy plug system, so plugging the tube and changing loads opens up options in the field.

I have a 870 and use foster slugs (Remington Slugger high velocity slugs) for deer and bears. One in the boiler room will put them down for good quickly. This year I got a super nova, I will be taking that out with slugs for the controlled deer hunt.

What kind of bush are you hunting in? and estimated ranges you've brought them down before?

When I picked mine up two seasons ago it was old stock that they hadn't updated the pricing on. I paid just over $160 tax in for 20" 20 ga 3" with iron sights. I haven't seen one below $190 (that was on sale with no tax yet) since.

Where did you find the 20 gauge 870 barrel ? Haven't been seeing them around. Thanks.

I have the rifled barrel on my 870. Installed the Remington saddle mount rail and then put a Bushnell red dot on top. Used it to harvest a moose in the northern prairies. Paced out the shot at 160ish yards. 2 3/4 sabot slug. Bullet barely opened and was under the hide on the far side.

Nice shot sky wagon. What length rifled barrel do you have on the 870 ? Been thinking of picking one up. I think a red-dot is a better choice over a scope on an SG.

For a few years I used an 870 with rifled barrel and scope. Groups of 1 1/2" at 125 yards were the norm with copper solids. Then I got tired of having to convert the gun from small game/waterfowl to deer and and back again after the deer gun hunt so I decided on a dedicated slug gun. Picked up an H&R Ultra Light Slug Hunter 20 gauge for $225 and I couldn;t be happier.

1" groups at 100 yards and 3" at 200 yards in a smaller and lighter package with less recoil and no hassle of converting my pump gun twice a year.

I've killed deer with a mossberg 500 with a smooth bore slug barrel and challenger slugs can't tell you how many for sure but would be north of 15, also have kill them with 870 bird barrels and challengers at close range. Have seen other take them with Winchester 2200, Ithic pumps and browning semi's. I have since hung my shotgun up an prefer to use my T/c encore with sabots.
