In the Market for a Black (Non-Res) Rifle - ACR/XCR etc

Hi Guys,

Thanks very much for the replies.

I meant 400 yds as an Absolute Max. I guess my 'normal' hunting range would be significantly less than that distance. It would just be nice/a luxury to have a round that could drop something at that distance if needs be. Sorry - I should have been more concise with my original post.

Food for thought

Thanks again

Francis

The ACR in rem 30ar will be good to take deer out to 400yds. It is close in performance to a 308 up to that range.

Herron Arms should be completing mine shortly

Famae 542 $3,000 reg. new (on sale now $2.650) approx. $2,500+/- used & weighs about 8Lbs. (expensive #5 shot magazines and spare parts may be harder to find),

FWIW, we have the standard rifles for $2650 regular price, the Tan improved models are $2999. We also stock all parts and can do warranty work on our own guns right here in Calgary.

I have also been looking to buy a non-restricted 308 black rifle for hunting.

I have been thinking about a Famae SG542. My reasons are because it looks like a nice dual use (hunting/range/SHTF) rifle and because I like modern military semi-autos. I'll probably pair it with a 7.62 Specterdr 1-4x; once again for the dual use. Here are some interesting articles I read on the subject:

Some very good reading there Aerobeast, thanks for posting it up as we need more shooters and non-shooters alike recognizing the merits and designs of Modern Sporting Rifles or MSR's (or black rifles).

Cheers D

Pretty limited info in those articles, touching on some other makes and models along with the caliber change ability of some is needed to give a better picture of what is available in the AR15 mag fed type rifles for hunting

Herron Arms has a working 300blk conversion that he does I believe, but that is about it as far as I know

Correct, Herron Arms will do a 300BLK conversion, but it cannibalize's all the gas system and barrel extension off the factory barrel to my knowledge, so by no means is it just a kit but rather a permanent caliber conversion since no spare NR barrels exist in the current market. If I can't get a trade on my spare NR length Tavor barrel for a CTAR barrel I may try Herron''s .300BLK conversion.

Don't let any of the blow hearts sway you on an XCR - try it first. And for medium game at 400, I don't think I would be looking at the 6.8SPC either. Prices are high for the options you listed, it will be above 3k with no optics.

Could a 6.8 SPC be done, or is the bolt face not right?

Np. I know it's not the most technical analysis...but it was enough info for me. I have been hunting with my family for years. My uncles and father have an ongoing thing (kind of a joke) where they all hunt for deer (and made me hunt for deer once) using Winchester model 88s with eotech sights haha. Lever action with holographic sights if you can imagine how strange it is.

For all you raising eyebrows, my family has been using a model 88 since the 50s and swear by it. Magazine, quick lever action, but performs like a bolt action rifle. Instead of choosing a modern rifle, they have stuck to the family tradition and compromised with the eotechs.

Even with this setup they have never failed on a deer hunt in Killarney ontario for 25 years now!!! I think modern military rifles are great for mid range (for me less than 200 yards) varmint and deer. In the end the brain is the best weapon, and most 308s will do fine for deer. Looking forward to this year's deer hunt with the Famae SG542...if they will let me!!
