ACR diet plan.

I noticed most of the herron rebarreled ACR's have a medium contour barrel that's the same diameter along the length of the barrel. Why not get a custom barrel with M4 profile (it's skinny under hand guard) with built in flashhider to reduce length and cut weight?? The M4 is not exactly a 'pencil barrel' profile.

My first non restricted barrel was a Herron pencil profile, weight was awesome but accuracy suffered. Be careful not to go too light if you go that route.
My 300BLK conversion I built doesn't use an op rod guide and I've had no issues after hundreds of rounds. I did use a carbine length gas system and shortened the op rod to match which may help but there are ways around it if you wanted to go with a carbon wrapped barrel as long as it has a 0.75" gas block saddle. Keep in mind you'll have to stick with a mid length gas system even though you have the barrel length to go with a rifle length system and also keep in mind that if the barrel is built with an AR spec gas port you will be overgassed since the piston system on the ACR is more efficient than the AR system. When I installed the factory ACR 16 inch in an AR upper I needed to open the gas port to get it to cycle correctly with a standard carbine spring and buffer.
If it was me and i wanted to do a light weight barrel but maintain accuracy I would have a medium profile stainless barrel custom made and fluted to drop weight, I doubt losing the QR barrel nut and handle would save you much weight or gain you any accuracy but you could remove the handle to drop a tiny bit of weight.

Keep us posted as to which direction you choose to go, I'd love to see one with a carbon wrapped barrel but it's way too much money for me for such a small improvement in a rifle I'm already so happy with.

Still cheaper than a MV :)

Cost isn't an issue since I rather upgrade than buy another gun I just won't use.

I love this platform and hate the extra weight, unless I can find something that cuts weight for cheaper, I have no choice but to drop it like it's hot...lol...
some people do fluting, what profile is your current barrel?

Never thought of fluting, Best part is my ACR is sitting at a machine shop right now.

It a medium contour Herron arms conversion.

lets face it guys we will all be buying the mv eventually as well

Yup probbaly. If its anything like all the other guns I said I would never get... ( Tavor and Cz858 ) ... lol...

I got a proof Carbon barrel for $1400 shipped, got it out of Calgary. I believe there's also an American company that ships to Canada. $800 US

I couldn't find any more info about whether this company went past prototype for an AR barrel but this would be the answer to weight problems associated with a heavier profile barrel for a better price than carbon.

I have a Tactical Solutions barrel on my 10/22 that has a stainless core with a fluted aluminum sleeve and it's nice and light and shoots well, unfortunately the only thing their website shows that's bigger than a 22LR is a 7.5" suppressed 300BLK upper.
