Recently acquired this RC k98 from the local gun store. I get the russians put an "X" on the receiver. But whats the symbol below the serial number?

thanks for the help..

The "X" is supposedly crossed rifles.

See Ive heard people say this, but that is clearly just an X. They say the ones with no caps on the lines are crossed rifles, but I think its bull####. Why would you use crossed rifles, but then on some an X suffices? Clearly two different X stamps.

Strange...I just bought a RC Mauser as well but it has no X and all waffenamts are still intact. Anyone know why the Russians used an X? Its not unique or distinctive by itself.

I would guess that they used an X because it was a cheap and simple way of marking the rifles.

If I were to guess, I would bet the X mark belonged to the facility where most of these were sent for refurb. M91/30 refurbs also all have a refurb mark corresponding the the Grau facility where the work was done. It would stand to reason K98k's were sent to a facility that specialized in them, as there were enough rifles to merit that. That facility's mark was likely the X we are used to seeing.

On Mosins, you see diamonds, triangles, boxes, squares, circles with an X in the middle, etc. and these all denote specific repair factories. So why not just a plain X for the captured mauser refurb factory? ;)

Thanks Claven. I always thought it was because the X stamping was cheaper than a more complex stamp.
