Today had to be the worst wind that I have ever shot skeet in. I don't have a wind meter, but the wind was blowing from almost directly behind the high house, pushing some targets from the high house into the ground as far out as 9 yards before the low house. Some targets from the low house climbed at an incredible rate, stopped before the high house, and were actually pushed back towards the low house before they were shot or they hit the ground.Several people shooting the doubles at station six , shot the low house target , and the target from the high house hit the ground before they could shoot at it. I could not do better than 24 today, and nobody shot a clean round. Anyone that thinks that skeet is easy because the targets are always flying exactly the same every time, really needs to shoot under conditions like we had today.

I feel your pain. Shot sporting clays Saturday at the new Sydenham Club in the pouring rain.

All of the clay games are easier on calm, dry days when it's neither too hot or too cold.

I seem to enjoy shooting in high wind conditions and snow storms. I get a kick out of it. I do not always enjoy my scores but its not always the scores that count!

I feel your pain as well, we had our monthly fun sporting clay shoot Sunday and boy was it blowing. Clays were rising and dropping like mad out there. We shoot in all weather rain, shine, snow and wind but yesterday was just crazy. I normally hit high 30's low 40's on crappy weather days but yesterday was 26 out of 50. Fun but frustrating.

Clay competitions aren't usually cancelled due to weather unless there's an electrical storm. If you do compete having some experience shooting in less than ideal conditions is very helpful.

Come to Oshawa skeet club, where the winds are always blowing, lol. On the rare days where there is no wind, we always joke, "what do we do?"
You learn to guard against a fast dropping high 1 pretty quick, among other things.

I can say with absolute certainty after a lifetime of shooting at various clubs across Ontario that there is no comparison shooting on windy days between Ontario and the prairie provinces!! Winds are the norm here and being wide open with nothing to block them makes for some challenging shooting. I would compare it to shooting in black fly season in northern ontario without the intoxication from overdosing on OFF or passing out due to blood loss!!

We a have days like this too, Sunday was one of them, coincidentally it made shoot Skrap a little fun than usual. What does always surprise is the number of die hard shooters who will not practice in the wind, tournaments happen in wind too. My skeet scores were off about 2 targets, I can blame the wind, but I pulled the trigger. One member on Sunday decided the conditions were right for him to shoot a round with his Model 12y Trap.

Wind is hilarious. Nothing quite so novel as waiting for a crosser to come to a dead stop before nailing it, or getting it before it hooks back and gets YOU

Yup, gotta love the wind !!! Last weekend at Stittsville (Ottawa) station 7 doubles was low house about 40 feet in the air and high house about a foot off the ground !!!!! What a hoot.

As long as the target from the high house is still in the air when it reaches the low house, I am happy. Out on the prairies, it's pretty much windy all the time. But finding unbroken targets 9 yards before the low house was a record for me, and it certainly makes the double at station 6 interesting. I normally shoot all doubles, but doubles from stations 4 and 5 would have been a bit much even for me in that wind. I even resorted to my 20 gauge, instead of my 28 gauge.

I've shot at Oshawa GC (they're on top of a hill) a few times in strong wind ... challenging at best when the high house hits the ground before the out of bounds stake.
Nothing wrong with asking that the trap be adjusted. Sporting, 5-stand & Trap in similar conditions can be a little daunting as well, but I actually enjoy the challenge.
Shooting waterfowl over decoys in high winds is something I rather like as well ! Not so nice for deer & moose hunting though !

We had another one of these days on Friday, sustained winds 30-40 kp/h gusts to 50 to the east. Temp started at +8 drop to 0c by 5pm. Naturally, we thought it was a perfect day to shoot skeet, trap and skrap. One gust the low targets would be slightly low to 20' up at the stake, the high sometimes didn't make it to the low house. Trap & Skrap were downright fun, made for some of the most interesting targets we've shot in a while.

Sustained lead is the key. If you are behind, you will continue to be behind. At my club, the fields are in a ring of trees (more or less) and its not uncommon for the birds to literally dip and dive then go back up 2 or more times.

Very exciting, those are the days you really look forward too.

Makes for a better eye...... we love shooting sporting in inclement weather. Do that enough times and on the nice days the birds are oh-so-easy!

I love shooting skeet when the brisk wind is straight into the high house: I have seen the high house targets lift like crazy and the low house targets rocket! It's awesome...

:( :( Now I wanna go shooting :( :(

Winds were up again yesterday but not as bad as Friday, at least it did warm-up to -8C. Shooting in higher winds certainly makes one relearn your lead pictures in a hurry, my best round of skeet yesterday was a 19.

When the high house targets hit the ground before the low house it gets tough to shoot doubles. When they hit the ground ten yards before the low house, it is just about impossible for me to hit the doubles at stations 3,4. and 5. The record at our range was about 12 yards in front of the low house, when the high house target hit the snow.
