I hate lever guns. They're ugly, old fashioned and for old men. :mad: and yet... I bought one, a marlin 1895 GS... And now I'm not too sure which part of the first sentence has any truth to my (previous) bias and which part was just me making an excuse for not having one ;) ... I really like the dang thing except for a few items which I hope you knowledgeable gunnies can help me out with:

  1. The trigger: Flops around left to right like a carnival dancer. Is that normal? if it is, does the Wild West trigger fix that left to right wiggle?
  2. The loop: I could not find a GBL model and the loop is too snug for me. Does the Wild West big loop work on a straight stock model like the GS?
 
The trigger wiggle - adds to the character of the rifle. :p

I believe there is a big loop lever available for the straight stock.

kind of funny I'm pretty much the opposite. I love lever actions, tolerate other actions, hate tupperware guns. but kind of got a tactikewl itch, been thinking about picking up something to fix that. Pistol caliber lever rifles are pretty fun to shoot too

Another lever rifle I have. Inexpensive plinking can be done with my .358 Winchester Browning BLR using 38 caliber (.357" diameter) 158gr pistol projectiles and Blue Dot. I load it with 310gr Woodleigh bullets and Reloder15 at 2100 fps MV for moose -

A fun load in the .358 is 40 gr. of 4198 under a 110 gr. hollowpoint .357 pill. Makes rabbit sized critters appear to vaporize like nuking gophers with a 22-250. Hits on raccoons are rather gory to say the least. Pushing that light bullet beyond 3000 fps. will usually leave a little smoke ring in the air at around 50 yds. as the bullet comes apart. Cheap thrills.:)

The WWG trigger is fantastic and removes the "floppy" factory one...a great addition.

For the lever, look at the one made by DRC (david r clay) if they are still available. Again, a great addition. Its not too big but enough to use with gloves or if you have larger hands.

While you're at it, the two other easy upgrades are a one piece WWG ejector and an aluminum or stainless follower.

Exact same for me, got in to guns in my late 20's and wanted nothing but modern bolt actions for hunting(still like those), and tacticool rifles and pistols.

Now I'm almost 38 and I want to buy a lever really badly(2 actually, an 1895G and an 1894), and I really want a Ruger #1 in a mid size caliber, maybe a 9.3x62. My last purchase was a Pietta repro 1873 SAA pistol in 45 Colt, I seem to have caught a serious case of the Fudd and I am loving it, lol. Only wish I had the money to buy all these guns I want but i have too many other hobbies(and actual needs/financial responsibilities) to get them right now but some day I will.

You hate them because they suk. Cluncky rat traps they are.

Lever guns had their day and that day is past. The modern pump gun is better no matter how many ways you look at it.
