Heckler & Koch to supply 101,000 HK416s to French army

Quick surrender in WW1?!?! You have no idea what you are talking about. The French fought off the best army in the world for four years and won at the cost of million of lives.
As for the WW2 the Germans lost that war, mostly thanks to the russians (80pecent of all German casualties were cause by the russians). Still the French were on the winning side in the end.

On top of that, if it was not the French playing delaying action and swearing to fight til the last man, the British would not be able to haul ass at Dunkirk. The French had done more enough to save the British expeditionary force under the threat of annihilation, and the British damn right needed to repay it in 1945.

After WW1, no one in Europe, neither french nor British, had any stomach for more war after wasting an entire generation of men in mud pits. Go to one of those old WW1 battle sites and you will understand.

Going back to HK416, the French has fought in Africa and Afghanistan since 2008. There isn't any doubt the experience had hastened the urgency to buy new rifles in 2011/12, instead of toying with FAMAS and the FELIN kit anymore. Because the special forces brigade has been using 416, the big army probably goes with the one has a proven track record.

You know, that no one really cares right? Sort of like the old Italian jokes ie you can always count on the Italians to come to the aid of the victor etc. They also finished on the "winning side" in the end. Again, some people really need to lighten up. There is no real disdain for any first world Army here. Some good natured joking, absolutely.

Now if we could move on from the hurt feelings, does anyone have any information on the selection process?

FAMAS or FAME factory no more ... guess what German army and French are buddy and took the same rifle: end of the story. pretty sure spec ops. will continue to use what they want ....

So are we going to see some FAMAS'S coming in? or are they gonna sell them to another army?

The useable ones will get stashed as war stock or donated to Africa. The others will get trashed.

FAMAS is a 12(X) prohib. There are actually some factory semi floating around as they were imported by Century Arms. They were like 2000 dollars back in 20 years ago. No love lost, they are big heavy and bulky. Ergonomic is not the best either.

The FAMAS also uses steel cased ammo and their reliability in other weapons could be a crap shot. The AIF solicitation includes ammunition ( and GL + bombs )

This announcement was not unexpected. The German army recently announced it was purchasing the G38 series rifle aka HK 416 with mods to meet their requirements. I think the French saw an opportunity to get quality rifles without all the cost by purchasing theirs at the same time. I can see them asking to do the final assembly at a French factory though. Side note IIRC 45% of the G43/K43 rifles reciever groups were made at St Etienne.

The French solicitation came out about 2011/2012ish, just when HK announced the HK416A5. It was clearly aimed at the French contract.

I am not quite sure how committed the Bundeswehr is in switching out G36, considering HK416 is like 40% more expensive than the G36. I guess we will see if their special forces like the KSK will do the switch first. The G38 seems to be going to the Border Police, which is Federal and therefore it gives HK416 the "G".

I don't think we will see anymore wide spread of HK416 - most "budget countries" like Portugal will be buying G36 for the joes ( but they bought HK416 for their special ops). Only the rich nations is willing to issue HK416 to everyone ( like Norway )

Interesting. So I guess the issues that were claimed to be surrounding the G36 are bust at this point. Too many countries are placing orders for them and the KSK are still using it.

The German regional court in Koblenz ruled in favour of Heckler & Koch (H&K) on 2 September in an action initiated by the company to challenge the assertion by the German Ministry of Defence (MoD) that the Bundeswehr's G36 assault rifle is technically deficient and in violation of procurement contracts.

Following the court's ruling that the G36 is not deficient, the MoD is not eligible for any compensation from H&K.

The decision was telegraphed back in June, when the court stated publicly that its preliminary legal opinion was that the G36 is not deficient within the terms of its procurement contract.

In a nutshell, German government ordered and got what it asked for.

It never fails to amaze me that after all these years and huge advances in technology, online translation programs still do such a poor job.

Only when computers become capable of making art will they become good translators. If translating was just translating definitions, it would be easy.. but we translate meanings, not definitions... and they are worlds apart.
