Alaska moose and grizzly hunt results....

Outstanding! Congrats on a terrific hunt; now we need details! I haven't even left for my moose hunt and I already feel inadequate!

Nice bull, did you score him? I'm guessing he'll go better than 220, good fronts and wide palms he should score well. Nice mountain grizzly too, I like the nice even fall hair, they make a nicer rug than the spring bears in my opinion and are usually nice and soft.

He has no points on top just a bunch of nubs that won't make 1"....We estimated 210ish but that was without measuring a thing. Taxidermy is being done by a guy on Kodiak who will score when it lands there. One camp over from mine put down a bull that green scored 235 the day before I got mine.

Coles notes stories on the two animals....

Grizzly was spotted feeding up the mountainside about 3/4 mile from camp (primary glassing point for hunt was 200m from camp). He was heading uphill slowly and the next drainage over was out of bounds for my outfitter so we had to double time it towards him. Wind was good and a long sliver of alders provided good cover until we were about 175 yards out. Shot off my pack but actually missed first shot clean as I was breathing so hard from chasing him up the mountain. Second shot put him down on the spot...

We spotted my moose bedded on the side of mountain with a cow while we were trying to get a closer look at another bull down lower. It was immediately obvious the one with the cow was a shooter so we quickly planned a stalk up the mountainside again along a patch of alders with good wind that put us within 50 yards of him. Guide grunted to get him to stand up and I shot him in the chest....he turned and ran and I put another one in hind quarter as he was running away. He made it 50 yards and piled up. We butchered and quartered him over the next 3 hours and then made one trip back with gear and backstraps/loins. Spent next two days packing the rest back to camp.

Grizzly and moose were killed about a mile apart. In the time I was there I saw around 15 bull moose (with some likely being repeats), 6 grizzly bears and about 20 black bears. Had a wolf tag but did not see any.

After first day of packing moose weather turned very bad which was fine for packing moose in but resulted in spending two days in tent after the pack was done until cubs could fly to start getting us and the animals out.

Outfitter was Renfros...they did a great job. Camp was basic but stocked very well with great food. Guide was great. Shot my bear on day two and on day three a cub came in to pick up the hide and skull to get to the freezer back in Bethel.

Also worth noting that 4 days before my arrival Renfros lost a guide, a pilot and a cub in a midair collision with a caravan near Russian Mission. Even in the face of this tragedy and loss of 5 lives they never missed a beat with their clients and their season.

Thanks for the further detailing of the story; I don't know about everyone else, but it really gets my blood pumping when I hear the accounts of the stalks, etc...especially right before hunting season starts for me! :)

Always cool to recover a bullet like that; they make great "secondary" trophies or mementos of a successful hunt.

Congrats again!

Yes the story behind the photos is truly the best part....Looking forward to Ardent expanding on his recent bear adventure...

My god, that is one big moose. Maybe I'll have to start saving my nickels and do a trip like that before I die.
