What group size is a good day for you 100M offhand?

I practice with my hunting rifles @100M standing. I wrap my left arm through the sling. With my '06 I shoot 4 rnd groups, with the 375 5 rnd because of mag size and making groups the equal #s out of 20. Anything above 6" bugs me because I know the shots I messed up. 5" doesn't make me mad, just a bit disappointed and motivated to improve. I've shot 1 group with each rifle under 4", the '06 was about 5/8" better than the 375, but I've been working with it longer. These are stock Savage and CZ rifles with a Boyd's on the CZ. I shoot 150gr moving quick with the '06, 270gr over 70gr of IMR4064 in the 375. Of course, consistency shot to shot is the battle. There are some very experienced shooters here so my question is what consistent group size is good enough? I would love to be consistent around 3". It seems that position and relaxed confidence on the trigger finger are what make grp to grp variations for me.

Note: For those who say shooting groups doesn't similate hunting; no it doesn't. It's much more difficult to be consistent than lucky once or twice. My goal is to make my fundamentals sound enough to shoot alright on a bad day. Those who say "always use a rest", no #### Sherlock; not often available to me where I hunt. Train with more difficulty so things are easier day of, not harder.

Once I've found an accurate load, I get the rifle dialed in off the bench rest then I shoot off-hand. To continue to shoot off the bench rest proves nothing. I try to keep all shots within a 6" diameter circle at 100 meters. An example using my 9.3x74R Ruger No.1 -

I average 2.5" at 100y with both my 308 and 30-06 shooting off hand.

The best group I've ever shot off hand was with a Marlin 444p, I had iron sights and no sling. To this day I say it was shi* luck on my part, but that was a very accurate rifle off the bench as well.

I like shooting my old milsurp, when shooting offhand if I am hitting minute of apple, I'm happy! Here is a typical group with my 1945 Ishapore No. 1 mk 3*

That is very impressive.

I'm basically happy if I can keep a whole box of shells in the 8 inch black bull of a 100 yard target from offhand and at a decent speed. Or keep almost all of them on my 220 yard gong that is a bit over 12 inches. Within that mess of bullet holes there's bound to be some decent groups.

Awesome shooting.

I'm up in PG for work...actually at home now but I'll be up there on the 25th to start another three week set. I'd love to see that done in person and get some tips...see if I can pick up some of the technique you use. If you want a shooting partner let me know.

And to add to the post,

I can usually manage to keep them inside 6" but theres still the odd one that I miss time and it goes out to lunch. I once shot a 1 1/4" group though...not that it means much.

I'm always up for getting out shooting, but I'm a ways away from PG. (Southern VanIsle)

A 1-1/4" inch group is great on its own, if it was shot off hand that's awesome!

Not that it means much? For true offhand shooting, no rest or anything like that, that is pretty impressive in my books.

All that matters is what you can do on demand, right then and there. When I'm on my game, and the planets align, I can keep my rounds in about 2" at 100, but not if the wind is blowing and pushing me around. When I can get lower and steadier, I do, regardless of the degree atmospheric cooperation.

I have shot many MOA or better groups offhand (sling supported)... but that is meaningless because I've shot thousands of groups... I am happy with 3" sling-supported groups @ 100... from about 200+, I am looking for a brace/rest of some sort.

From 100m to 300m, makes my day :p

In fact, pummeling that 6" piece of AR500 with any guns I own makes my day :p

May I ask if any of you riflemen is shooting "against the clock" ? Let's say 5 or 4 or 3 seconds per shot - at 100 yards or meters ?

Starting with the rifle butt touching the shooter's belt or waistband, muzzle up, or starting with the rifle butt already on the shoulder ?

I don't time it. Faster sometimes forces me to be more decisive on the trigger, but I have to walk before I run.
