Campfire caliber conversations

Walking around a corner of a forest trail and coming face to face with a brown bear?
A 600 nitro would feel tp light!

Ardent and I sort of did that already. "Sort of" because well bush doesn't have a lot of corners, and it was a little farther than face to face. Then you have to substitute grizzly for brown bear (but that just a matter of name, all grizzlies are brown bears) and further substitute moderately loaded 300 RUM for 300 Win.With those wee little adjustments what happened next is the bear died so fast it didn't know what hit it. So will the next one.

I'd be with you if you said elephant.

1) Varmint 22-243
2) Mountain (deer, sheep, etc.) 300wsm
3) Close Range Thick Cover (deer, moose, elk) 45-70 marlin lever
4) Big Game (anything that walks in North America) 375RUM

For cartridges 1-4 .................The 340 Weatherby Magnum.........:):):):):):)

But I also agree with Dogleg and I do like my 22-250. Now if we weren't stuck with factory cartridges I would have a whole 'nother answer.

#1- small varmints.........204 or 22-250
#1A-large varmints.........22-284 or 6-284

Mountain game...........340 with 200 gn bullets, 7mm RUM, 300 RUM, 300 Wby

heavy bush hunting.....340 with 250 gn Partitions, 350 RM 225 ABs, 470 NE, 35 Sambar, 375 WSM

Heaviest game in NA....340 with 250 Parts or 240 Matrix, or 9.3X300 WM with 270 gn Matrix, or any 375 from the H&H up in power.

Coming suddenly on a brown bear who has already decided that they don't want you there is a whole different thing from one that as no idea that you are there with bad intentions. Bad from it's point of view I mean!
A hopped up, full of adrenalin bear is very different from one that is peacefully going about its business.
My 505 Gibbs, when I had it, would feel about right under those circumstances!
I wish were were able to hunt elephant in North America!

My hunting partners and I were sipping chilled beverages around the campfire after a day of deer scouting last weekend and the topic of "ideal calibers" for particular uses came up.

Curious to see what the CGN community thinks. It's an academic exercise of sorts, but we had a great spirited discussion about it. Our only criteria was that the caliber had to be chambered in "regular" factory rifles.

1) Varmint
2) Mountain (deer, sheep, etc.)
3) Close Range Thick Cover (deer, moose, elk)
4) Big Game (anything that walks in North America)

1) 223
2)30-06
3)30-06 or 12g rifled slug
4)30-06

Keep it simple

LOL, there are elephants here but they are in places that would get you into trouble if you were to hunt them!
