Come the new year when funds look better, I may have a project mag well for forum member rambones.
I am not sure it is possible, but think ACR-esk. If not I was going to see what he would charge to duplicate a SPUHR mag well and bolt release.
When I talked to the owner of RDSC about bringing in a SPURH mag well he said that Spur told him that their country's laws had changed and the could no longer export "gun parts" luckily their scope mounts are not categorized as such.
If what you say is true, Spur must have told him a tall tale as I have confidence he is an upstanding person with no need to lie to me about the issue of needing to order a batch.
Interesting issue of legal compliance which I am not inclined to believe. Germany is said to have the strictest export laws in regards to defence technology and yet it isn't a problem for an individual like you or I (well, the seller does that on the behalf of the buyer) to get the permit for the export of a magazine well (speaking for experience dating back a couple of months). Stripped lowers (well, upper and lower receivers), stripped bolts, and stripped barrels are the three items that are under strict export control (including requiring an import permit from the country of receipt). Everything else (not including optics, that is a different category) (at least for Germany) requires some paperwork that is really just a formality.
Duplication via resin pressure casting of the magwell body should not be a problem (although pressure cast resin has about half the strength of injection moulded polyethylene plastic, and even less than the nylon that the magwell is likely originally made from) and can be done at home, but what about the metal parts that compose the mag release? Or duplication of the magwell via being completely milled out of aluminium? We are speaking of a product that is approaching 400 CAD in price, so maybe CNC milling is the way to go? And then of course comes the issue of patent protection. Whether Spuhr's design is patented or not is unknown and if they will be unhappy by their product being duplicated or not is also unknown.
Bolt releases perhaps can be made by forum member CNADNSL8-5? He has experience is bolt release manufacture.
Did they mention a price for a 30-50 pc order?
Seems like it would be pretty easy to get 2-3 dealers on board, and with a few private guys you should hit that easy.
New information indicates that Spuhr indeed cannot export the magwell to civilian clients at this time due to Swedish laws. This comes from another official Spuhr dealer.
Does anyone have a magwell that can be used as a sample for locally made reproductions? Or maybe a license can be sought from Spuhr for local manufacture from aluminium? By "local" it really is implied "Canadian".
I am almost positive rambones will have no problems doing this, the question is should it be a Spuhr clone or a new design that resembles an ACR magwell and mag release if possible?
I like the idea of ambidextrous controls, something the sphur did not offer.
I am pretty sure the Spuhr is in such demand because it was the only ambidextrous magwell. And indeed it is. The NorthEasternArms well released from the left, as does the official HK well. Spuhr has releases on both the left and right hand side. Check the photos on their web page.
