Am I nuts?? (Hunting equipment)

This is a free country, dress and identify as you wish. I'd respectfully suggest you ditch the mare's leg. You'd do fine with just the spray if you weren't hunting. All bush fashion aside I'd have to admit that would be a levity rich setup to encounter in the field, it isn't Jurassic Park out there. ;)

Sounds like a lot of equipment to be hauling around through the bush with two firearms....but to each their own I guess...

DON'T! According to Murphy's law, you're 5 times as likely to see game when your rifle or bow is not within reach because you're eliminating waste.

I will never forget the time I got up to take a leak and left my crossbow leaning up against the tree I was using as a backstop. Not wanting to leave my urine scent too close to my watch I walked away a little bit, right towards a 10 point buck laying down in a little gully out of sight. I had walked into my watch very quietly and the buck was laying there all that time well within bow range. When I got too close he jumped up and we stared at each other a bit before he ran off.

A guy I used to hunt with was famous for having to take a dump in the bush. One day he did so and leaned his rifle against a tree while he hung his butt over a nearby log to do his business. The rifle was of course out of reach when a buck walked up to watch him having a dump.

Pack what you want!!! It's your back & your hunt. Not having what you need when you need it sucks. If you are uncomfortable because you left somethin you might not be as focused as you should be. Carry your stuff & then decide if it is to much. I don't like a Mares leg but that has no weight in your choice. Good luck!!
 
I'm a old fashion guy I like the old well built, sometimes heavy equipment but I must admit I am seriously looking at going with ultralight camping gear , clothing and rifle
I don't expect it to be a strong nor as comfortable but I can live with that if it means I can travel with a lightweight pack and go further and still carry out my game
I find sum times even just one rifle can be a Real pain in the butt wen a quarter is tied to the packboard
 
Pack everything you think you want/need and then use it several times in the real world. That alone will help you pick the mutli-use items, eliminate duplication and highlite the essentials.

As you do that the essentials that are "mission" specific for hiking or hunting or camping or photography will become "painfully" obvious.

Then simply leave the rest at home.

I wear one of these after rocking a smaller fanny pack for years. Twbig pockets, two smaller on your waist, a spot for water and another mid size pocket. It hold everything you've listed and a bit more and is quite comfortable. it also has provisions for a chest mounted camera bag, turkey call bag or bino holder. I tried a chest rig but found stuff up front too cumbersome.

This is what I use while hunting, big enought to carry everything I need/want when I'm hunting but not to bulky. Plus if you need more room it turns into a backpack. I do all my hunting on foot aswell.
 
Update for everyone.. I've had a handful of days out this year. Lots of long hikes with my gear and I think I've got it relatively sorted.
A plate carrier has been working quite well. I get everything I need on it, and can have an almost empty backpack to haul out any game I get.
I did ditch the ranch hand while out with my rifle as some have suggested. Turn out you guys were right and it's extra I don't need.
The plate carrier holds:
Water bottle,
Binos,
SLR,
Calls,
Ear protection,
Bear spray,
Quick access knife,
cell phone,
Range Finder,
GPS,
All I have in my pack is:
shooting sticks,
first aid kit,
butchering kit,
rope and carabiners to hang game in a tree.
Works awesome. Everything I need is in easy access, and I don't have to make noise and shuffle to get anything out of my pack.
