Pick 5 cartridges that are "must have" in your safe, range, field, etc...

Well as I'm down to 5 guns now this should be an easy one, subject to change whenever I get bored and sell something to fund a different purchase of course, or when I buy more than 5 again : )

Geez, can't seem to get it below 7...

;) You're not the only one. Seven is also the minimum I've been able to pare the harem down to. But, :p heaven forbit that I should ever be faced with that, ;) gun control like level of choice.

You can tell the avid gun owners from the avid hunters by the lists, and I make no judgement on stating that on either group. You can also tell the traveling hunters from the regionally / species specific ones. The regional guys have an enviable freedom to accept overlapping use cartridges and don't have to ask as much from each choice.

22 lr for a toy
17 hmr for gophers a little further out
30-06 speaks for itself as a hunting round
454 casull because my rossi lever gun us my definition of fun with a rifle
And a 12 gauge because

Not sure where the overlap is or how to thin the herd to 5.

If open to suggestion,

7.62x39 is of low utility given we're in the hunting forum, its ground more than covered by the .223 AND .260. Pick a .243 or .257 and you don't need either the .223 or .260. .260 and .308 do the same darn thing, fully duplicated there. Even having a .308 and a .300 doesn't make a ton of sense, .300's a better .308 than the .308 is by very good measure. Both are already loud and can be used in the same places.

If you needed to be able to hunt all the same stuff without picking something not on your list, you're not handicapped in the slightest by,

Can't say I disagree with with your list. Gets the jobs done.

The .308/300 wm thing is a tough one sometimes. I like .308 a lot, it works. But sometimes it's not quite enough, just as equally as sometimes .300 wm is too much. I guess that's where location and target are the criteria.. If in Ontario .308 is plenty, if in BC .300 would be a better choice for example.
