Hello all,

My second daughter finally bagged her youth season mule deer buck yesterday afternoon. She missed a few opportunities due to various reasons but she's been putting in the effort ever since her sister got one early in the season and it has paid off. This was her last chance for youth season. Bonus is she took it in another region, so she can still take one in our region during regular "any buck" season which starts on Saturday.

Same light "practice/deer" .270 Win load as the earlier deer - 130 gr. Speer SPBT pushed by 43 grains of IMR4320 for a MV of about 2670fps. Nice light recoil and excellent terminal performance. Shot was about 130 yards, into the shoulder. Both lungs shredded and skimmed the top of the heart, then punched through an offside rib bone and stopped under the hide. Its a 2x2, if anyone cares.

Thank you. My favourite size too. I agree 100% about the meat. I can't eat antlers.

Thanks! Yes, he is a pretty decent size for a 2x2. I have seen some bigger 2x2 mule deer with tines around 14-18" long on each side, but only in my neighbourhood where I can't legally take them.

Thanks! I moved them from a .243 to a .270 this season in order to prepare them for a moose draw that they won this year. The goal was to build a .270 practice load that would have not much more recoil than a typical .243, and it just so happens that this is still more than enough to kill mule deer. I chose the soft projectile due to the reduced velocity. Works almost too well - definitely some meat damage. Fully-charged 150 grain Grand Slams will be the moose medicine. After seeing how the "practice/deer" loads work, I realize that the .243 is not of much use to us any more. Probably off to the EE.

We ate this deer's tenders last night and they were fantastic!

Thanks! He is a good size, for sure. A lot of it has to do with the fact that his stomach was absolutely stuffed with food. I've never seen a deer stomach that big and full. Not a lot of fat on him, though.

Yes indeed. My wife and 70-something mother (both also fully licenced) will be joining us. Plus a friend of mine and his two boys got a moose draw in the same region at the same time and another friend of mine will be coming along to help out.

Shooting a moose is on my mom's bucket list, so I hope I can help make it happen. Got to get some serious scouting done through October.
