I am looking for information in order to fight a decision that makes having your Black Badge mandatory for people to attend 3 Guns matches.

Looking for info from other provinces, other "3 gun leagues", other gun clubs.

Is Black Badge mandatory at your club for 3 Guns ?
If no, any other requirement ?
Also, province and gun club would be nice to know since I'll be presenting this to the board.

Thank you

Absolutely NOT required where I compete. Honestly the BB course is a money grab and a joke. You learn some gamer based stuff and focus on the rules of IPSC(there's a ton) but there's nothing in the course that is earth shattering or uber special and nothing taught during the BB course is needed for 3 gun.

Black Badge is not required, Alberta, Medicine Hat Rifle and Revolver Club. No other requirement to participate in 3 Gun Matches. If a shooter is unsafe they will receive a stage or match disqualification depending on what the unsafe act is. The club has held so intro to practical shooting courses which cover holster use, reloads, strong hand and weak hand shooting, barricades, movement, etc. this course is not mandatory but was created to try to generate more interest in club matches.

I have also shot 3 Gun in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. They do not have a Black Badge requirement.

3 gun doesnt require a BB... Local clubs may

Ipsc universally requires a BB within Canada, but then again, that's not real 3 gun

My 3 gun match accepts multiple holster qualifications. BB is just one of them. 3 gun is more tactical and practical than BB teaches anyway, IMO. In fact, though IPSC has rules for pistol, shotgun and rifle separately, there is no rule about combining all 3 firearms in the same stage.

I have a question. If I wanted to shoot a match with my duty sidearm, in my duty holster, am I going to have a bunch of weiners making a fuss for not having the almighty black badge?

Not at our matches.
We do not discourage police from competing or using their duty gear.
However, we do require them to abide by regular civi mag capacity laws for "open to the public" matches just to keep the playing field somewhat even.

I have my Black Badge, but BB certification was not specifically required at either of the 2 clubs I shot 3 Gun events at in Ontario this summer. Nor was it required at a CQB (aka 2 Gun) clinic I took at Petawawa. Some type of holster certification however was required. Club level holster certification, IDPA, BB or other comparable holster certification.

But the 3 Gun match 'rules' all differed slightly at the various clubs.

Bottom line is each club exec is going to set their own 'rules' and 'standards' by which their various matches are run. And let's face it, some of the execs at some clubs are terrified of 3 Gun and even IPSC matches being run at their clubs. Often find these same 'anti' 3 Gun/IPSC execs have never taken any sort of holster certification course and when I watch some shoot handguns at the range can't help but notice a number usually look pretty uncomfortable indeed handling and shooting handguns period.

Bottom line is many of the older club execs don't have any experience with these types of events and therefore are really uncomfortable with them. Hence they will choose to error on the side of extreme caution...up to and including not permitting them at all.

Think the OP should look into running a couple good quality club level holster certification courses and try and get a number of their club execs to participate.

Not required here.

That being said, I MUCH prefer shooters to be holster trained and competent in their use. Scares me a bit seeing newer shooters for the first time under the clock when allowed to holster and pull while loaded.

I have basic and advanced holster training, and a couple years of pistol speed challenges and 3g events.

While I don't expect everybody to be an expert, learning under time and mental challenged situations is not the best place to learn.

I knew I should not have started reading this thread... now I want to try 3 gun. I live in Strathmore so Alberta guys, where is the noob friendly shoots??

We are 6 hours north of you.... a bit of a drive but, we would be happy to have you come up for one our "bigger" matches next season.

Keep checking this forum, clubs all around Alberta, Saskatchewan and BC advertise here.

Medicine Hat is done 3 Gun for the season. The club has an annual pistol match in April and 3 Gun in June and September. These are club matches so the scoring and rules are different than 3 Gun Nation. They are noob friendly. There is a steel challenge coming up on 15 Oct if you want to get some pistol in. More information on the club webpage, www.mhrrc.ca

Thank you for the feedback guys, I appreciate it.

Our club used to be like that too, now new admin, and black badge requierement is being implemented for no real reason. The club is on a military base, for military members but very open to civilian members and its currently detrimental to the sport AND the members.

Please keep me informed of the rules of your club and how 3guns/CQB are ran.

Thank you

DT

If the range is on a military base have you looked in B-GL-381? I believe there is some guidance with regard to RSO qualifications, percentage of civilian RSOs, etc. There may be other info regarding qualifications. Also is there anything in the club bylaws?

Not talking about RSO, but about actual participation. Nothing in the bylaws requires a BB for 3guns as well.

It's basically a case of the good idea fairy...
