I just ordered a new M700 Varmint, in .22-250. I got the blued version.

They come with a synthetic stock, but from what I've read, it's not the greatest.

What stock would you recommend for this, and who has the best prices & selection?

The 2 stocks that I see for sale, are the Magpul Hunter SA and the Bell & Carlson SA.

The Magpul is $360 and the B&C is $400.

The Magpul comes with various 'inserts' for adjusting LOP, comb height etc...

The McMillan stocks are worth (or cost) as much as the rifle.

I was sorta hoping somebody might have feedback on the Magpul or Bell & Carlson stocks??

The Magpuls are essentially plastic with lots of doodads, rails, whatchamacallits and tactical options. At least the BC and HS are fibreglass with aluminum bedding and durable coatings. May not have the Lego appeal of the Magpul but are a much more durable/stable shooting platform. Try and find an HS take off from a 700 LTR. No palm swell and nice and compact, easy to shoulder. McMillans are great but not worth more than a grand. If you go that route wait on the EE, all this stuff comes up regularly and you might as well take advantage of someone else's bad decision making and overspending. Shooters, myself included throw money out the window regularly and our "must haves"easily get turned over at 60% of what we originally paid.

phinton81, that's good info on the Magpul.

Of the two, I was leaning towards the Bell & Carlson anyway.

The problem is, I never seem to see these bargains... :sok2

Btw, what's a M700 LTR ... is that 'Long Range Tactical' rifle..??

700 LTR is a model Remington puts out and stands for Light Tactical Rifle. It's a compact model and the stocks are from HS and quite nice in design. They are much more compact than the police models and considerably lighter. The stocks are highly sought after and only available from the complete OEM gun.

Ahhh... so near impossible to find and premium price, eh?

I have a slightly modded LTR and totally agree with phinton81 on all points regarding the stock. IMO it's a much better and useful rifle than the full sized 700P.

Thats good feedback.... been out of the 700 game for a while.......

It's such a useful design. Relatively straight combed for bench shooting but still comfortable for off hand shooting and with a very comfortable ambidextrous grip and not such a wide/fat fore end.

My LTR is unmodified as its a superb handling, accurate rifle thats as comfortable at the range as it is in the field.

Concur....... but all dollars based...... the edge a3 would be even better, but OP would be looking at $600 plus for it (carbon fiber).....

Edges are graphite not carbon fibre and with the exchange rate, duties and shipping you'd be over a grand getting one here not to mention the 6-8 month wait.

I love my McMillan stocks but I'd never buy one new under the current circumstances, EE only. Scored a nice Edge Hunter for a Tikka T3 Compact last fall for $600

You just have to be patient and budget for $3-400 for one depending on level of urgency on part of seller. Failing that, get a B&C from Prophet River, he has lots of colours in stock and the B&C is a great stock for someone wanting to upgrade, not double the cost of the rifle or wait the better part of a year for something else(McMillan)

Agree on all points here phinton81.

The mods done to mine are simple. Recessed crown (not needed), large bolt handle (not needed), mag extension (can never have enough ammo!) . Small front rail for bipod (necessary for the Atlas) Want to swap out trigger but not totally necessary.

I have an excellent GA Precision bolt action and purchased the LTR as a back up for it. It always amazes me how much lighter the LTR is compared to the GAP yet it's pretty much just as solid. Also find the LTR pretty accurate.

A co-worker years ago paid a lot for a Tango 51 but also had an LTR for backup. Said he loved his Tango but the LTR easily shot as well and could live without the Tango. That's a pretty good endorsement !
