I just got a used Norinco M305 on the EE. One of the things I've noticed, which is disconcerting, is that the tab on the Operating Rod is undersized for the track on the receiver. It's not falling out of the track, but I don't like all the wobble. What are my options for getting a replacement Operating rod. It looks like there are new manufacture Op rods available from the states, say from LRB, but I don't know if these and other new op rods are unattainable buy Canadians. I also see that treeline has surplus op rods that have been re-tabbed. What are the thoughts on those. I would appreciate as much input as possible.

Thanks
Mike

Problem with that is that you don't know what you're going to get. I might be jumping out the frying pan in the the fire, so to speak.

http://treelinem14.com/ has usgi ones, that being said they may not just drop right in, might require some fitting, but you also dont want to take to much if anything really off those tabs. I have 2 of the re tabbed op rods from treeline and they work great no complaints

Thanks for the vote of confidence on the re-tabbed rods. That's the kind of information I am looking for.

Get nick at Vulcan to refurbish the tab for you.
I had a customer get his done by nick and I did the final fit but he can do it all if u send him your action.

Stock norinco tab

Re-tabbed

I don't think it really needs to be super tight in the track to function properly....it's not going to improve function, or accuracy, or reliability.
A loose op-rod with field gauge swallowing head space go hand in hand with these rifles, along with off index barrels, crooked flash hiders, loose op rod guides, etc.
I know it's hard to enjoy them "as is" but they are HUGE money pits if you don't. They will work, and shoot, and function fine with minimum effort and minimum $$ output.
Go shoot it first before you replace any parts....but not with cheap Russian steel cased ammo, spring for some Nork, Hirt, or PMC.

Thankyou for the advice, but the loose op rod would bothers me, as does the excessive head space.

As Hitzy said and I should have mentioned, this mod was done to a match grade rifle. Medium weight Krieger barrel, new bolt, usgi trigger group, gas cylinder and oprod etc...

If it bothers you, do it, but it will not increase the accuracy or function of a stock norinco.

Thank you, but me thinks it's not going to stay stock for very long. That is, if the receiver makes the grade. I think I would rather have a modded Norinco than a SA. LRBs are too rich for my blood.

one would be amazed at how much the oprod can affect accuracy and function.
I fit new oprods to all my rifles if there is any wiggle or wobble.
My oprods feel as if they are on hydraulics they operate that smooth and true.
Not everyone has the skills to perfectly fit an oprod but it's possible. I've done some big write ups on fitting oprods on this site but sadly none of it got stickied,

anyhow, Nick at Vulcan is a top shelf recommendation , just can't go wrong there. He can correctly soften the metal for retabbing and machining to usgi dimension, then correctly harden the tab after. Not many folks I'd trust with that job other than myself but Nick is certainly the only guy I'd recommend.

otherwise, USGI oprod from treeline or elsewhere would certainly be a good upgrade.

has there been any discussion on pricing of these wolverine USGI kits?
hopefully they are affordable and not ridiculously priced like most other Canadian gun stuff LOL

Wolverine said around $1000, complete rifle with the rear portion of receiver cut off. Pretty good deal considering the outrageous prices M14 parts go for here.

I agree, for optimum accuracy and function from a m305 or any firearm, all the components have to work in concert with one another. A sloppy op rod does not allow that.
Thankyou for adding your vote of confidence regarding work done by Nick. I went ahead and contacted him about fetting it done.
