Hello all. I have a question that is a little off the usual topics. I have four of five bottles the high percentage Deet mosquito repellent, ranging from 90-100%. Most studies have concluded that percentages over 30 are pointless. What would be the best way to reduce the higher percentage Deet, down to 30-40. What additive would be best additive to use? I'm thinking isopropyl alcohol. Any opinions? Thanks to all who can offer help

I totally disagree that anything over 30 is pointless. When you are in an area with lots of bugs and you are sweating higher deet does make a difference. In my experience the higher the deet it will lasts longer, keep the bugs from even landing on you and it even keeps wasps back which I find 30 does not

I use the 30% stuff for when in shorts and t-shirt and the 90% stuff for when wearing long pants/shirt and just need it for my neck, back of hands etc.

I've never noticed that 100% DEET keeps the critters away any better than weaker stuff, but it definitely keeps working much longer.

I used 100 per cent DEET in malarial regions because it lasted longer. The weaker concentrations need to be applied more often.

Use the least amount of deet that is effective in your situation. I dont know about diluting this stuff ...it's not the sort of chemical you want to take a bath in and deet is absorbed very rapidly into the bloodstream and organs. Something like alcohol may not be a smart idea. I would go and buy a new repellent with the dilution you want.

use permethrin
it will keep both out of your clothing
Use DEET on you and spray Premethrin on your clothes. The problem with Premethrin is that it isn't approved for human use and not that easily available in Canada. Try Amazon or a pet supply shop.

Once used a Canadian Forces issued insect repellent while hiking through Manning Park.
One application and no more needed for the next three days...
Deep Woods Off only Rang the Dinner Bell for those blood thirsty buggahs.

look at the e3mpirical data from the boys that were in nam- where the mosquitoes outnumber the population by about 4/1 at least- they used 100% deet- and they had foggers running up and down the riverbanks-this crap was all started by some stupid woman whose kid suffered brain damage down in the states- that's why they HAD to find a formula that was INFANT SAFE- well, the last time I cked I weren't no infant- i'm in my 60's and I apply it properly- and it's old muskol stuff- the 95% deet

Wish I could still get the 100% stuff, but like many things, if not used with common sense and in moderation it'll likely kill ya.

CF issue is the best I've used also

Is the 100% stuff no longer available up here? What a relief! I feel much safer...

Now if we could just get the AR's out of the hands of all those pitbulls, and remove all that non-pasteurized cheese from the store shelves, and get every round of ammo serialized, and up the domestic content on all TV broadcasts...we'd be moving towards a proper Canadian society...:)

I remember when "Bens" had this oily stuff that was 95% Deet, and it was awesome. Then they made a law that said it couldn't be more than 30%. F'n sucks now. I'd love to get my hands on a case of the good stuff......
