I just trade for a weatherby vanguard in 300 wsm, it has weaver bases and I started to mount a scope and discovered that the front base is a bit lower that the rear base, at least a 1/32, I have the correct bases, 35 and 36, so what do you use to shim up a base? it also says on the packaging for the base it may require shimming

Have you shot the rifle without shimming?
Is your elevation adjustment maxed out?

Until you do, don't be jumping into thinking stuffs wrong.

As an aside I have used brass shim stock in the past to make my own whims.

I get small pieces left over from jobs at work.

Cut and drill to fit.

I bought a cheap set of feeler gauges at Princess Auto and used these as their width was near perfect and there is a good selection of thicknesses.

I have never found it necessary to shim the bases on a Vanguard, then again, I don't use Weaver bases. I used Tally Lightweights on my last Vanguard, and they worked perfectly.

I haven't seen it for awhile but it was more common on the first series. The issue
It isn't variation in the bases it's variation in the recievers.
That means that if you haven't seen it before it doesn't mean you are good, it means you're lucky or unobservant. .030"
Is normal if you need the shim.

I can't remember the number anymore but there is thicker Weaver base with the correct hole spacing that will fix the issue. It required a helpful counter guy, opening a few packages and a caliber but we found one. Wish I remembered the #, but I sold rifle a long time ago. I remember having a similar issue
With a Mark V ultra lightweight as well.

Just use cheap feeler gauges or pop(beer) can as shims, works fine. You can also find the right sized deep socket and use it, wrapped with fine abrasive paper, to grind down the bottom of the high base.

thanks for all the info, but I am not going to shim the base when tally mounts won't have that issue, I might have shimmed the base up if the rilfe was a smaller caliber, it's a 300wsm
