Hey everyone, I'm thinking about a pistol that would be ideal to throw in a survival pack. The idea being if you got lost with no firearm, you could pick off a spruce grouse with a head shot. I go for walks in the bush with my kids in the winter so it has to function in cold weather(-30'C)Also just to have along for quiet fun while big game hunting. The obvious answer to me is a reliable 2lr pistol, but I don't think that's legal without a special permit so not an option. What options should I consider?

Never ever talk about it. Because you just admitted you want to break the law. A permit to carry a pistol in the bush is very hard to come by. You can apply but it gets approved maybe 5% of the time.

Your only option us a pellet pistol less than 500fps or an antique status pistol- i see lots on the EE but itll cost you a few pretty pennies

Ohhh... well man i cant say really. Ive had it out in winter many times but it would be nice days i have it out on. Im not sure if it was overly cold. Deffently not -30, maybe -5 or -10

Henry AR-7.

Or chiappa little badger.

Pistol is next to useless for a survival gun. Get a rifle, and the simplicity of the little badger means reliable.

That said, a .22 cal air pistol might work for you as well, but you will likely be limited to a single shot anyway.

Any suggestions on where a person can find a 495fps 22 air pistol? Lots of options in the us, I'm not finding so many here.

It's available online from Cabelas Canada.

The perfect "kit" gun was already made by Smith and Wesson and if Canada's laws were not so crazy and our government so untrusting of its citizens we'd all have one of these in our backpacks or fishing tackle boxes.......

Great set up

I was at Bass Pro a couple months ago and looking at their Stoeger break-action double barrel side-by-side shotguns. They were carrying 5 different models. 4 of them were of the 12-guage variety.

One that really stuck out to me was the .410 coach-gun. I believe the barrel is 20-inch length and as it's a .410, the barrel diameters are smaller. The sales guy told me that the .410 coach-gun is the perfect shotgun to put in the old backpack and throw it over your shoulder and head out into the woods.

At .410 gauge, it's intended for small game and grouse specifically. The sales clerk also mentioned that the .410 is not very loud upon discharge whereas the 12 gauge is.

The ONLY downside of the .410 is that the shotgun shells are expensive. For a box of 20-25 shells you're looking at $21. In comparison, the 12-gauge you can get 25 shells for as little as $8.
