Southern Ontario fall turkey season

Still nothing. Does not appear to be anyone else out either. No shots at all. I don't think fall turkey is as popular with the locals as spring turkey is. We have seen 1 fox and 3 coyotes. When I come back up on Thursday I will bring the 700 SPS Tac in 223.
 
I'm going to give this fall turkey hunting thing a try. I have no interest in Jake's or hens so I'm really limiting myself from what I've been reading. I think chasing turkeys in the fall colors will be fantastic! Tomorrow morning will be my maiden voyage into the turkey woods...more of a live fire training run I think rather than serious hunting.

Lots of turkey action today. Even though it been mostly miserable out with rain and wind. With the occasional sunshine break. Everything is soaked. I took my brother out for his second turkey hunt at about 0830 this morning.

We saw 2 hens on the laneway just past the gates. They did not seem too concerned and sauntered off the lane.

This got him pretty excited so we drove to my main hunting area and set up. We were making some calls and a doe wandered over making a lot of noise. We decided to move to another spot, and while we were moving I spotted a turkey about 10M into the brush. My brother fired a shot and it missed - the hen escaped unharmed. We tried a few other spots and we were able to call a few in, but not close enough to shoot. We are relaxing now on a break. We will head back out late this afternoon. All told we saw 6 turkeys in about 3 hours. It looks like they are beginning to flock up.

There are lots of coyote and fox tracks and droppings around. I also found what appeared to be old bear crap. Anyone ever heard of black bears being in the southern Georgian Bay area? I haven't. If we go by that area again I will take a pic.

It was awesome. Perfect weather and I was on birds right off the hop.I've been hunting the property for years so I pretty much know where to find the birds. Had what I assume was a Jake fly down across my nose but landed out of range. Had lots of action 50/60 yards inside the bush but time restraints prevented me from hunting really hard. Sounded like a lot of fighting was happening...lot of wing slaps. Heard a gobble which excited me...going to try an afternoon hunt maybe tomorrow. Can't believe I've never fall hunted them before, it's gorgeous out and stunning colors! Let's see if I can pull it together and bag a Tom.
 
Let me think 20 % get turkeys in the spring and 5% in the fall (my estimate only). Do you feel they will give up the revenue from the other 80% and 95% . Not likely,so spring to fall tags will never happen . When the price of a tag defers you from hunting turkeys because a store bought is cheaper ,then you really don't want to hunt turkeys.

Lol...... I agree...... if I used cost as a main motivator for what I hunted, I wouldn't be hunting.....
 
I bought a fall turkey tag for the first time this year. The property I typically hunt spring turkey on recently became available for bow hunting deer. I figured since I have seen a flock of fifteen to twenty and a second flock of around a dozen I'd best have a tag in my pocket in case they got close enough.
 
No turkeys shot yet. Yesterday several flocks of geese flew over. Today I put some decoys in a field and brought my calls and a box of shells. I shot 2 geese at dawn. Right now we are playing the calling game with the turkeys. Trying to bring them in to range. My brother is impatient LOL. I have to keep reminding him to sit still and not call so much. But it's a learning curve. I am glad to have this time with him. This is his first year hunting. He will be buying a migratory bird license for tomorrow. It is a little strange combining a turkey and a goose hunt. I am giving him and his family the meat from the 2 I shot.
 
Finally! After not being able to get my 13 year old daughter on a bird for her first hunting season this spring, she bagged one today! Very exciting hunt for both of us.

We got into the bush and settled by 6:20 am Nothing was happening and it was about 8:40am so I decided to try a kee kee run call. Sure enough, two hens came out of nowhere and were very curious as to locating the source of my call! Closer.....closer....closer....bang! Aaaaaand a miss!

Both birds quickly trotted off the way they had come. They were surprised but we stayed hidden and they didn't look like they were going to head for the hills...hopefully. I waited about 20 minutes and did another soft kee kee run call, hoping they were still in the vicinity. And sure enough, back they came. This time they stayed to my daughter's left and walked out of sight so she didn't have a shot. So a little later, another soft kee kee run and again they appeared, this time following pretty much the same angle of approach as the first time. And this time my daughter got the job done!

It was a great shot - a couple little flips and then the bird was still. Soooooo happy and soooo proud of her. Here is a pic of her and her prize and below that is a video of the shot...it is hard to make out the bird in the video but you can't miss the happy and excited dad ;)

Great looking turkey! congrats!
 
This is such a great experience for you both. It's moments like this make me wish I had kids. She was totally calm and got a great head shot. Nice hunt in every way possible.
