Sharon Gun Club

Welcome. "Buying a share into a gun club"? What the heck? Tell us more about how this works. Every gun club I have been a member at just required a yearly membership fee. Is this place some kind of exclusive range like a fraternity or something?

See post #13. The shares required for membership entitle one to a share in the property on which the range sits. Share ownership funded the purchase of the land so that the club could be started and they've gone up from $250-ish when first issued to $7k+ recently.

I aquired ashare in August. This is a great club and shares will be harder and harder to find into the future. Shares may be either purchased or leased from shareholders in order to apply for membership. Safety courses and observed shoots are required while on probation before gaining full access. Yes they are pricey but you get what you pay for plus appriciate equity

It can easily go south if local municipalities decide it's not wanted so there is some risk.

Its been like that forever there, when you decide that you don,t want it anymore, at least you have something that you can sell, and recoup your expenses.

OUCH! That is nuts!

There always seems to be someone on kijiji willing to sell a share. Be very very careful and ONLY go on Sat. mornings to the clubhouse to do the transaction. If they won't then it's a scam. There was a dude who was selling for $4K and I emailed and asked to meet on Sat to buy the share. Nada, nothing, zip. I already had one but was curious.

I've heard $10K being offered. The club is at risk of becoming a playtoy of the rich. There is talk about trying to help out the young shooters but it's all talk, the old boys who bought them for $250 back in the day are hoarding them even though I know for a fact 2 of these oldtimers are LOADED. I guess their kids will make out like bandits once these hoarders pass away.

The only positive is my son will be able to buy a subsidized share once he turns 21(or 22).

Unless this place includes time shares in Hawaii, then I would not be interested at that price. The club my membership is with is $30 a year and they have a very good 500 meter range. One of the last clubs I was a part of had two outdoor ranges, facilities for trap shooting and skeet as well as an indoor range that you could attend anytime of the day or night. Price was $60 per year and that included a Regional Park pass to two different local parks.

Some of these fellas advertising the high prices on kijiji are just out on a fishing trip to see if they can suck someone in..
They are probably the same guys that lowball every share that they see for sale.

The law of supply and demand is driving the share prices. Sharon is arguably the club with the best all-round facilities in close proximity to Toronto. i think it is a good sign that interest in shooting sports is growing but costs and the difficulty in starting new clubs makes it impossible to keep up with the new shooters.

Areas outside of congested metropolitan areas will have an easier time matching supply and demand but unless land near the GTA suddenly becomes cheap it's not going to happen here with average detached homes going for $1.3 million.

^^^ It will be a sport for only the rich.. perhaps traveling a little further afield will keep it alive

It sure it a shame. I bet over half the share owners do not even shoot anymore. The club house is full but the ranges are empty. Meh it is what it is. Gotta pay to play. Anything within 2 hours of the GTA is full it seems.

I would also place bet that 1/4 of the total shares may have been lost in time with older members passing away. Indeed it is a shame.
