Fun .22?

I owned a few semi's over the years for the "fun" factor. Dumping rounds got old quick! Don't own any anymore.
I prefer bolts with irons, bolts scoped, single-shot peeps, and lever….ymmv of course.

That said…if I were in the market for a "cheap" semi it would be a tubed Marlin 60 with a Simmons fixed 4x power.

I'm in the same boat as OP but I want it as my first gun for fun. I had in my mind to look at the Mossberg 715T or Blaze since the 10/22 magazine thing happened :(. On the upper end of things, I thought about a CZ512 as well but again there's a price difference but not a HUGE concern in my case. Am I looking in the wrong areas?

In my opinion you can't beat the Marlin 60 !

Well you guys certainly got my attention with the Marlin model 60. It's something I never would have considered but after reading up on it, I have to say I'm intrigued. After watching Hickok45 get all sentimental and then watching him shoot it it's obviously no slouch. Really I'd never even heard of it. Why does the 10/22 get all the attention? And the micro groove barrel is what really got my attention. Is it really that accurate?

Are they accurate? Yes they are, at least they're more accurate than the Ruger 10-22, my model 60 will out shoot my brothers' or father's 10-22 any day of the week. Why does the 10-22 get talked about so much? They are easy to dress up but the Marlin costs less.

One thing though, be prepared to give the model 60 a break in period, the one I bought 4 years ago took a few hundred rounds to get the action running smooth, I was having light primmer strikes, the action wasn't fully running home until it smoothed up. Also the trigger will improve with use. Now for me this was all taken care of in the first outing.

If you want something cheap, tactical, light, has a expandable stock for bigger guys and eats up dirty cheap ammo and likes to NOT be cleaned and oiled try the 715T.... Ran smoother then one of my 10/22 at half the cost.

Keep in mind the 25 round mags have issues feeding so use the stock 10 rounders.

I have over 5000 rounds through my second one and love it. My buddy has one to and hes taken it grouse hunting with no issues.

I'm in the market for a fun plinking semi .22. I was leaning towards a 10/22 but with the magazine fiasco, I'm going to hold off. The primary use of this rifle will be introducing new shooters I bring to my range, so I'd like some cool factor. I'm thinking the STG44 or the ISSC scar knock off. I kinda like the pietta PPS50 as well but I'm leaning towards the STG at this point. Any feedback or other suggestions is appreciated

I own both the STG44 and the ISSC Mk22 SCAR and they are both amazing rifles. Overall, in terms of quality, the STG-44 is the better of the two but it is on the heavy side (all metal and wood) and has no mounting rails. the MK22 on the other hand is covered in rails and is mostly of polymer construction. The MK 22 takes 22 rd mags that are very close in size to AR mags while the STG uses longer, narrower 25 rd mags.

The rear sight on the StG44 can be completely removed and a scope rail can be attached without any problem. Pretty easy job. I removed the rail because I prefer to shoot with iron sights. It's more authentic this way. Still keep the rail just in case. The StG44 is IMHO the most accurate, high capacity, .22LR carbine available on the market nowadays. Beats hands down the 10/22 which looks crappy by comparison. Surely, the StG44 is on a heavy side. Not for weaklings.

Fun .22? Depends on the day.
10/22 for semi-auto fun.
Winchester 61 for pump fun.
Win 9422 for lever fun.
Cooey 60 for bolt fun.
Deustch Werke for single shot fun.
Savage 24 also for single shot fun.
Savage/Anschutz for accurate fun.
And then there are the 22 magnums...
:)

For new shooters, I'd probably suggest a bolt gun, but any .22 can be a lot of fun. There's nothing wrong with the 10/22. No need for 25 round mags for new shooters.

Mine's a Mossberg Plinkter 715t TALO edition. Came with a unload-able 25 round mag. It's fun, reliable, and shoots straight. And less than $200. Another excellent option is the Chiappa Little Badger. It's a single shot break action, but a hoot to shoot.

I have sgt 44 and a 1022 and remington mod 12,a lever henry, rem 512, but the real strange duck is the savage mod 6d. As it fires bolt action by pushing in the bolt lock or semiauto buy pulling it out. And the bolt holds back if you hold the trigger back till you release it,very strange but accuret gun.

Bolt,Lever, pumps, falling block actions you can shoot sub Sonics ( mouse farts) not much louder that most air guns just another Option if noise could possibly be restive .22 short is louder but not by much . Bought a Mk 22 ajustable stock , length and comb hight and it folds, large mag capacity, all kinds of rails, pop up folding sights, last round hold open ,tacktical cool look ready out of the box will cycle any ammo other than sud sonics but will fire them single shot . Any 22 is fun to shoot when it functions / works .

I just picked up another .22... a Rem Nylon 66.. wasn't sure what to think about it until I shot it. Cool little rifle.

I think the days of the cheap Nylon 66 are over- they've become quite collectible, and prices are hitting $300-500 , they are great and like you, people may be turned off by the plastic, but google Tom Frye and you'll see they are accurate, reliable and really quite cool. Too bad they are getting so expensive. makes a great , fun .22 for anyone.

The StG is super cool. Haven't shot it, but I want to. I vote for that one. Looks "scary" to new shooters, but clearly isn't, what with no recoil and relatively no noise. Would be good for getting them over their fear of cool looking guns and set a good path for black rifle ownership or at least acceptance.

I started shooting with my ruger sr22 and I still love this thing.(sadly the magazines are now gone) A good tube fed lever action is also quite fun to plink with.
