so, I pulled apart my ruger 22/45..and like so many others was having a b*tch of a time trying to get it back together. finally did, but then thought about blasting the lower end with more cleaner as it still felt gritty. couldn't get the damn thing to open up, so I punch out the hammer pin and it came apart after that. That's when things went from stupid to worse, somehow another pin decided it wanted to walk itself out and straight down the drain of the sink. 1940's house, no traps...ya, she's gone for good

anyone know a good smith in the Niagara region who can hook me up? or maybe even someone who might be able to supply a whole new lower??

cheers!!

Bummer, I had no idea that the P-trap was a modern invention..... it seems so basic. What keeps the sewer gas from backing up without a trap?

My first thought was try fishing it out with a magnet tapped to the end of some tie wire.... but maybe you should contact Location Snapshot for some replacement pins. Probably take a while but sometimes they actually have spare parts in stock.

You'd be better off long term waiting for the new Ruger Mk IV to hit Canada then buying a whole new lower for that 22/45.

It's brand new and is stupid easy to take apart. A single button. ETA.. "soon".

call snapshot, they are the Ruger parts and fix it shop for canada.

i got a cold shiver up my spine remembering the first time i took apart my 22/45 and how bloody much fun that was.
i swear i just about bagged all the pieces and fired it in the garbage can!

What kind of trap are we talking? You can get flexible magnetic wands from PA. Provided the pin wasn't flushed past the trap S you should be able to fish it out.

A taxidermy push pin cut to length or small roll pin (kits are available for PA) might work provided it's close to the correct dia.

Unless you have a indoor outhouse, there must be a trap of some kind or your house would smell like sewer 24/7

Exactly.

I've seen some older houses where the trap is under the floor between basement or crawl space joists. Perhaps this is the case here. Subsequent basement renovations that put up ceilings sometimes cover them over when the worker isn't thinking well. By rights there should be an access panel for the trap.

If it's a pivot pin for the sear or some other part that is in the lower I've gotten by with using a matching size piece of common bright finish nail. Or if the other pins are the same size and it's a common size like 1/16 or 3/32 (.062 or .093) then you can pick up tough music wire from a model airplane or model railroad hobby shop and make a new one. It cuts best with a Dremel cutoff disc for making such pins as this. There's also a number of other in between sizes in the rack of K&S music wire. So even if it turns out you need an oddball "in between" size the rack of music wire may give you lots of pin material.

This kind of reminds me of the 1 wall, 2 wall and 3 wall ping.

1 wall it's easy to find

2 walls, you might find it

3 walls, forget it..... gonzo for ever. Same with the ceiling ping:(

way back in stone age, a old gunsmith told me that if you have never worked a gun before, or Rugers, use a old rug and a big box to stop the missiles.
I have lost bits and 1/2 the shop was wood shop, kept a huge old magnet.
You Must have a trap on that sink somewhere, that house is not that old.
could be lead pipe.

The trick is to close your eyes , be still and go in to echo radar mode..... :)

hey guys...
thanks for all the replies and suggestions!!! And the stories :D Glad to know i'm not alone in regards to this.

it's a 1940 house that was originally septic and cistern, then switched to municipal i don't know when... The cistern is still there, i use it as a big ol' rain barrel and use for all my outside water. The sewer lines cut across two other properties out the back of the house, not to the street. hey, i just live here lol. Visually there's no trap that i can see...two sinks merge into one downpipe, the dishwasher T'd in. Perhaps there's a trap between floors, but i don't want to rip apart a ceiling for what will probably amount to a $3 part ;)
i tried a magnet right after the pin went for a dip but no luck.

I'm gonna have my LGS order me a new one, and there's a guy at the range that's offered to "re-build" the bottom end for me. He's the LGS' go-to guy when it comes to rugers :)

again, much thanks everyone!!

Mark IV lower won't fit on an earlier gen upper.

ah....Never said anything about mating parts between his 22/45 and a Mk IV. I meant instead of buying a new lower for his upper, that he'd be better off spending the money on a new, easy to disassemble and clean Ruger Mk IV. NOT buy one for parts for his old pistol.

I knew what you were getting at :)
imho, i'd have to spend a few days with another anything ruger before i dropped the money on another. I know people love them and 99.9% of those that have shot them have never had a problem, and my experiences with are probably never heard of outside of this thread...but this is one very finicky .22lr i can feed it one type of ammo only, anything else and she chokes right up. even the one ammo it will cycle it still catches brass on the eject maybe 1/20

not saying i don't like this one (or i'd just let it sit and collect dust), just saying there's some "refinements" i'd like to make to the ramp..........................once i get it back together ;)
